Job Role Overview

A collections professional oversees accounts receivable process in an organization, ensuring timely collection of outstanding debts from customers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement efficient strategies for collecting outstanding debts to minimize delinquency and enhance cash flow.
  • Monitor accounts to identify overdue payments and determine appropriate actions, such as sending reminders or escalating cases to management.
  • Communicate with customers to negotiate payment plans, resolve issues, and respond to customer inquiries.
  • Coordinate with internal departments to resolve billing and payment-related discrepancies.
  • Maintain accurate records of all collection activities, including customer interactions and payment arrangements.
  • Analyze delinquent accounts and prepare reports on collections status to inform business decisions.
  • Implement credit policies and procedures to minimize late payments or non-payment risk and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel or external collection agencies as needed to pursue debt recovery.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field; master's degree may be preferred.
  • Proven experience in accounts receivable management, preferably supervisory or managerial role.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices, particularly accounts receivable and collections.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, interacting effectively with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Analytical mindset with ability to assess data and trends for effective collection strategies.
  • Familiarity with collection software and tools for managing accounts receivable.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Certifications in collections, accountancy, or a related field are highly valued.
  • Prior experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment is desirable.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel, is required.
