System Programmer Job Description

We are seeking an experienced system programmer to administer and support a messaging infrastructure that supports enterprise applications and batch processes.

  • Maintain a secure, reliable, and high-performing messaging infrastructure.
  • Ensure the smooth operation of MQ Series and File Transfer Edition (FTE) on the z/OS platform.
  • Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams to ensure minimal disruption during upgrades and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, and maintain IBM MQ Series and MQ FTE on z/OS.
  • Manage MQ objects including queue managers, queues, channels, and cluster configurations.
  • Monitor MQ performance and availability, applying tuning techniques to optimize throughput and reduce latency.

Upgrade Support:

  • Plan and execute upgrades of MQ Series and FTE components on z/OS.
  • Conduct compatibility checks, regression testing, and rollback planning.
  • Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams to ensure minimal disruption during upgrades.
  • Maintain detailed documentation and version control records for upgrades.

Security & Compliance:

  • Implement and manage MQ security protocols including TLS/SSH certificates, RACF integration, and security exits.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational and industry standards for secure messaging environments.

System Programming & Integration:

  • Support integration of MQ with z/OS subsystems including CICS, DB2, and IMS.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts using REXX, JCL, or Assembler for MQ operations.

Disaster Recovery & High Availability:

  • Design and implement MQ Queue Sharing Groups and RESLEVEL configurations for high availability.
  • Contribute to disaster recovery planning, testing, and failover strategies for MQ environments.

Collaboration & Support:

  • Partner with developers, infrastructure teams, and support staff to troubleshoot and resolve MQ-related issues.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing within the team.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience with IBM MQ on z/OS.
  • Deep understanding of MQ Queue Sharing Groups, FTE configurations, and MQ monitoring tools.
  • Proficiency in COBOL, REXX, JCL, and related language tools.
