IBM i Operations Specialist

The Role:
A key player in our organization's success is the IBM i Operations Specialist. This role is pivotal in ensuring the smooth operation of complex computer systems, and we are seeking a skilled professional to fill this position.

You will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology, supervise and control intricate networks and applications, and operate distributed systems in a multi-vendor environment. As an IBM i Operations Specialist, you will be on the technical frontline – performing batch operations as per service agreements, analyzing first-level issues across systems, and resolving/routing issues as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

  • System Oversight: Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of IBM i systems, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability of critical business applications.
  • Monitoring and Support: Responsible for system monitoring, job scheduling, backups, troubleshooting, and user support.
  • Scheduled Jobs Management: Create, manage, and monitor scheduled jobs using tools like Robot, Advanced, and Native schedulers.
  • Job Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot and restart failed jobs, ensuring they complete successfully.
  • Batch Process Monitoring: Monitor batch process, automate job streams, and provide daily operational support.
  • Device Health Maintenance: Maintain system and device health for high volume printers and tape drives.
  • Backups Management: Perform and manage backups.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Analyze logs and conduct root cause analysis of recurring problems.
  • Training and Guidance: Develop training materials and provide guidance to junior staff or cross-functional teams.
  • Process Automation: Automate routine tasks to improve efficiency and reduce manual interventions.
  • Compliance Management: Conduct audits and manage compliance with regulatory frameworks.
  • Problem-Solving and Communication: Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, excellent communication skills.
  • Documentation: Document and maintain operational procedures and runbooks.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience: 5-7 years of experience in IBM i/AS400 Operations.
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of IBM i (AS/400) systems, including system architecture, LPAR (Logical Partitioning), and OS versions.
  • Rotational Shifts: Ready to work in 24/7 rotational shifts.
  • Troubleshooting and Technical Experience: Troubleshooting and technical experience related to IBM i.
  • Disaster Recovery Planning: Perform IPLs and good knowledge in disaster recovery planning and execution.
  • Transition Expertise: Expertise in handing transitions.
  • Run Sheets Management: Must be able to run jobs from established run sheets and maintain those run sheets.
  • Troubleshooting Tools: Knowledge on basic trouble shooting of Mimix, Power HA, iTera.
  • Backup and Recovery Tools: Knowledge of backup and recovery tools.
  • Pressure Handling: Ability to work under pressure and handle system emergencies.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree: Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Technical Support: Operating as a single point of contact (SPOC) for service delivery across different technologies and platforms.
  • Delivery Readiness Reviews: Evaluating delivery readiness reviews, RFS approval, job responsibility reviews, and management of the same.
  • System Backups: Perform regular system backups and ensure data integrity.
  • End-User Support: Provide technical support to end-users regarding AS400 system issues.
