About This Role

A highly experienced Database Architect and Administrator will play a key role in designing scalable data architectures, ensuring high availability and supporting development teams with optimised queries and resilient data pipelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain, monitor, and tune production and staging MSSQL and PostgreSQL databases for maximum performance and reliability
  • Manage high availability, backups, restores, replication, and disaster recovery strategies to ensure business continuity
  • Ensure uptime and performance SLAs are met across cloud and hybrid environments through proactive monitoring and issue resolution

AWS Database Expertise:

  • Administer RDS, Aurora, and EC2-hosted database instances with expertise in Amazon Web Services
  • Monitor database performance using CloudWatch, Performance Insights, and third-party tools to identify areas for improvement

Data Architecture and Design:

  • Work with engineering teams to model new schemas, optimize indexes, and review queries to improve database efficiency
  • Implement and enforce best practices in database normalization, partitioning, and data lifecycle management to ensure data integrity and security

Security and Compliance:

  • Ensure data encryption, access controls, and audit logging are in place and compliant with company policies to protect sensitive information
  • Support GDPR/SOC 2/ISO 27001 initiatives with appropriate database controls and evidence collection

Collaboration and Mentoring:

  • Provide database guidance to developers and DevOps teams during code reviews and deployments to ensure best practices
  • Share knowledge, mentor junior DBAs, and improve documentation and internal tooling to drive team success

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience as a DBA, including at least:
  • 5+ years with MSSQL Server (SQL Agent, SSIS, performance tuning)
  • 5+ years with PostgreSQL (query optimization, extensions, logical replication)
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS database services: RDS, Aurora, S3, and IAM integration
  • Solid understanding of SQL query optimization, execution plans, and troubleshooting slow queries
  • Proven track record of managing production-grade environments with strict uptime SLAs
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and automation using tools like Terraform or Ansible
