Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in rail infrastructure and engineering, with a proven track record of delivering projects on time and within budget.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out railway track related design activities, assisting the Head of Department or other delegated personnel in project progress, utilisation, forecasting of work reporting, mentoring and guiding junior team members, and checking their work for quality. They will also be required to develop ballasted and non-ballasted track structures, track alignment, profile, and associated grading plus drainage, assess rail vehicle/infrastructure clearances, and peer review track design and associated reports prior to submission.

Key responsibilities include:

  • A proactive hands-on role in railroad track design projects
  • Management of the track design process through the conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design phases
  • Development of ballasted and non-ballasted track structures, track alignment, profile, and associated grading plus drainage
  • Assessment of rail vehicle/infrastructure clearances
  • Peer review of the track design and associated reports prior to submission
Required Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and qualifications:

  • Horizontal and vertical alignment design and reporting. Different modes (Light rail to freight) and different design stages (concept through to detail)
  • Turnout design – both simple and complex design solutions
  • Clearance assessments, both for greenfield and brownfield and to understand the build-up of the kinematic profile
  • An understanding of track componentry and track fixing types
  • Awareness of maintenance principles
  • Establish and maintain working relationships
  • Able to plan own work to meet project timescales and budgets
  • Able to communicate effectively with managers and other engineers in all disciplines
Software Competencies

The ideal candidate should have working knowledge of the following software:

  • MicroStation/AutoCAD/Open Rail Designer
  • Microsoft Office
  • Gauging clearance assessment
  • ProjectWise or similar software for handling of designs
Qualifications

The ideal candidate should hold the following qualifications:

  • Civil Engineering degree
  • Working towards or willing to work towards Chartership
  • 7-10 years experience of rail infrastructure/engineering environment
