Special Education Therapist

Chennai is home to a renowned institution with a legacy in education. This special school, located on a scenic campus, offers a wide range of educational programs and services for children and adults with various disabilities.

The institution provides pre-vocational and vocational training programs, including the National Institute of Open Schooling curriculum, supported by a team of rehabilitation professionals offering physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Special Education Therapist to join our multidisciplinary team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in physiotherapy, along with experience in teaching or working with individuals with diverse learning needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments for children with various needs, such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, Down syndrome, and ASD with motor delay.
  • Develop, implement, and review individualized treatment plans in collaboration with teachers, parents, and other health professionals.
  • Deliver one-on-one and group therapy sessions tailored to each child's developmental level and physical needs.
  • Provide support for physical access and mobility within the school environment, recommending adaptations and assistive equipment.
  • Monitor progress and outcomes using evidence-based tools and update care plans accordingly.
  • Support pupils with postural management programs, mobility aids, orthotics, and safe handling strategies.
  • Work closely with teaching staff, occupational therapists, speech & language therapists, and school nurses.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings, reviews, and transition planning.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records, risk assessments, and reports in line with professional standards.
  • Provide training to school staff and families on physiotherapy programs, manual handling, and positioning techniques.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • 3-7 years of experience working with children and adults with multiple disabilities.
  • Degree in Physiotherapy (BSc or MSc) and HCPC registration.
  • Previous experience working with children and/or young people with special needs is highly desirable.
  • Manual Handling and Safeguarding Children.
  • Knowledge of conditions affecting motor development and experience with specialist equipment.
