Behind the Scenes of System Architecture

We're seeking an experienced Backend Engineer who can contribute their expertise in system architecture and data flows.

This role requires someone with a deep understanding of how and why data moves through systems, identifying bottlenecks, and developing reliable solutions.

  • Skill Requirements:
  • Data Flows Expertise: Design, build, and maintain backend components, APIs, and integrations.
  • Infrastructure Knowledge: Help architect data flows across PostgreSQL, key-value stores, caches, and object storage.
  • Security Skills: Implement secure authentication/authorisation using Auth0, OAuth2, OIDC, and JWT.
  • Search Vector Experience: Support search/vector search/ranking and external API integrations with OpenAI and Azure.
  • Monitoring Expertise: Set up monitoring and observability using OpenTelemetry, dashboards, and SLOs.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Remain aware of and build for data regulations, including GDPR and others.
  • Containerization Skills: Containerise solutions for scalability and compute flexibility using Docker/K8s/serverless, CDNs/WAFs.
  • Adapters and Contract Tests: Write adapters, contract tests, and manage schema diffs for evolving systems.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate across teams to identify gaps, ask questions, and make suggestions.
  • Algorithm Implementation: Contribute to the design and implementation of the RightScore algorithm, combining ingredient databases, human behavior patterns, and ethical/product metadata into transparent scoring.
  • Logic Layer Optimisation: Build and optimise logic layers, ranking systems, and cross-referencing pipelines that feed into consumer-facing products.
  • Product Intelligence: Work with vector search, embeddings, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) for product intelligence.
  • Ai-Powered Interfaces: Support the development of AI-powered interfaces by shaping the backend that feeds them.
  • Translation of Wellness Logic: Collaborate with product and science leads to translate wellness logic into robust, explainable models.

Skills and Qualifications Required:

  • 5+ years of experience in backend engineering and system architecture.
  • Strong grasp of data flows, infrastructure, and integration patterns.
  • Proficiency with REST APIs, backend/frontend integration, and secrets hygiene.
  • Ability to handle PostgreSQL, caching, object storage, and streaming systems.
  • Experience with containerisation, serverless environments, CDNs, and WAFs.
  • Familiarity with hybrid/vector search and ranking approaches.
  • Working knowledge of PII/PHI/GDPR handling in production systems.
  • Experience with data modelling, ML pipelines, or applied machine learning in production systems.
  • Understanding of ranking, scoring, or recommendation systems is a plus.
  • Familiarity with LLM integrations, embeddings, or search-driven AI is desirable.
  • Analytical thinker who can work independently and thrive on collaboration.
  • Curiosity and courage to ask 'why,' not just 'how.'
  • Clear English communication, written and verbal.
  • Ability to work across time zones with UK.
