Job Overview

The role of a Global Intellectual Property Engineer involves managing the company's Intellectual Property portfolio, including patents and trademarks. This position requires close collaboration with stakeholders from R&D and Innovation, as well as patent attorneys on patent and trademark applications.

  • This engineer will serve as the primary point of contact for inventors, providing support to both them and the business in an optimal manner.
  • Additionally, this position involves closely monitoring the IP activities of international competitors and staying abreast of market developments.
Key Responsibilities

The following are key responsibilities associated with this role:

  • Performing prior art patent searches on various patent databases, analyzing, and developing inventive concepts to enhance patentability of inventions.
  • Working with R&D teams to review research outcomes, harvest inventions, and prepare invention disclosures.
  • Liaising between R&D teams and the legal team, as well as engaging with outside counsel, to coordinate the preparation of patent applications, invalidity reports, patents filing and renewals, FTO reports, and other related documents.
  • Conducting technical analysis of patents and other technical documents.
  • Developing strong analytical skills with a deep understanding of technology.
  • Preparing claim charts for FTO or patentability assessments.
  • Organizing global patent surveys.
Requirements

The following qualifications and skills are required for this role:

  • University-level qualification in a physical science, such as materials, chemistry, physics, or engineering.
  • Experience: Ideally at least 8 years of industry experience in a similar role, preferably dealing with the development of materials and engineering solutions for high-temperature applications, such as refractories.
  • Good knowledge of major patent systems, including PCT, US, EPO, Japan, and China.
  • A keen interest in science, technology, and intellectual property.
  • Key skills: patent searching (patentability and FTO), patent analysis, IP landscaping, claim chart preparation, product searching, competitor analysis, invention disclosure preparation, excellent written and verbal communication capabilities to liaise with in-house R&D and legal teams and outside patent counsel.
