Job Title: Cruelty to Animals Investigator

Job Description:

The primary objective of this role is to utilise various research and investigative methods to conduct thorough investigations in our focus areas, encompassing the use of animals for experimentation, food, clothing, entertainment, and labour, as well as investigations into environmental and human health hazards related to these issues.

This position reports directly to the Director of Investigations.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
  1. Conduct assigned short- and long-term investigations – including covert operations – from beginning to end, comprising the following duties:
  2. Conduct desk research on animal protection laws and issues, analysing technical papers, watching videos, and employing various means to prepare thoroughly for investigations and create a comprehensive checklist
  3. Travel to and stay on location for various assignments for as long as necessary (including for several weeks or months at a time, if required)
  4. Visit industries that use animals using various methods
  5. Obtain, inspect, and keep copies of relevant documents and paperwork from government offices, businesses, and industries during investigations, as required
  6. Develop and work with trusted contacts during investigations and ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times
  7. Submit detailed daily log notes in an orderly fashion
  8. Document conditions and use of animals, as well as illegal, cruel, and improper conduct using photography and videography
  9. Adhere strictly to department standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure legal compliance and that materials can be submitted to the authorities where required
  10. Log photos, videos, and other documentation carefully and meticulously on a daily basis per SOP
  11. Transcribe videos and select scenes for use in video edits
  12. Assess evidence for violations of laws with in-house counsel
  13. Work with experts to assess investigation findings
  14. Prepare detailed reports of findings, with a clear narrative
  15. Perform tasks to prepare for the public release of investigation findings
  16. Cooperate fully in law enforcement proceedings that result from investigations, as needed
  17. Behave legally and professionally and bring issues of concern immediately to the supervisor's attention
  18. Recruit and work closely with trusted volunteers or contractors, ensuring professionalism and thoroughness in their work and that confidentiality is maintained
  19. Maintain strict confidentiality at all times
  20. Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
