Genetic Counseling Role


1. Identify patients or families at risk for specific disorders or syndromes based on genetic information.

2. Explain diagnostic procedures such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS), ultrasound, fetal blood sampling, and amniocentesis to enable informed decision-making.

3. Provide genetic counseling in areas of clinical genetics such as obstetrics, pediatrics, oncology, and neurology to support healthcare professionals and patients.

4. Assess patients' psychological or emotional needs related to stress, test results, financial issues, and marital conflicts to make referral recommendations or assist in managing test outcomes.

5. Offer counseling to patients and family members by providing education, reassurance, or information to promote understanding and support.

6. Determine or coordinate treatment plans by requesting laboratory services, reviewing literature, and considering medical histories or diagnostic data.

7. Discuss testing options, associated risks, benefits, and limitations with patients and families to facilitate informed decision-making.

8. Interpret laboratory results and communicate findings to patients or physicians to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment.

9. Interview patients or review medical records to obtain comprehensive patient or family medical histories and document findings.

10. Provide information about the inheritance of conditions such as breast, ovarian, prostate, and colon cancer; cardiovascular disease; Alzheimer's disease; and diabetes to promote awareness and prevention.
