The Azure Data engineering team is at the forefront of transforming analytics in the data realm with products such as databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. Our portfolio includes Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build a data platform that powers AI-driven applications and fosters a data culture.

Within Azure Data, the databases team develops and maintains operational Database systems, storing and managing data in a structured manner to enable various applications across industries. We are working towards developing developer-friendly, mission-critical, AI-enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational, and OSS offerings.

Azure PostgreSQL is a rapidly growing team within Azure Data and Microsoft, seeking a Principal Group Software Engineering Manager. If you have experience building large-scale managed database cloud services and enjoy designing and delivering cutting-edge technologies, this role may be suitable for you. Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • Total experience of 15+ years

Other Requirements

Candidates must meet Microsoft's security screening requirements, which include passing the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 15+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of people management experience.
  • Industry experience in building OSS and PostgreSQL.

Responsibilities

As a principal group engineering manager, you will lead and own key areas of the service, working closely with product, engineering peers, and collaborating with teams within and outside your organization. You will also be responsible for a large group of software engineers and their managers, ensuring your group thrives and remains productive while nurturing individuals' careers and cultivating Microsoft values.

To accomplish this:

  • Lead and manage a group of software engineers and individual contributors, promoting ownership and accountability.
  • Guide the group in designing, developing, testing, and deploying high-quality software.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time and meet all business and system requirements.
  • Collaborate across groups and disciplines to shape solutions and ensure they provide value to our customers.
  • Mentor and coach team members, assisting with their professional growth.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders to ensure alignment on project goals and deliverables.
  • Foster a culture of agility, innovation, and customer-focus within the team.
  • Comply with project plans and industry standards.
  • Set a high level of technical excellence, participating in design and code reviews, and act as a technical leader for the team.

Compensation Package

The estimated salary for this position is $250,000 - $350,000 annually, depending on experience and location. In addition, Microsoft offers an industry-leading compensation package, including healthcare benefits, educational resources, discounts on products and services, savings and investments, maternity and paternity leave, generous time away, and giving programs.
