Role Summary:

This position is responsible for reviewing and analyzing medical records to accurately code surgical procedures performed on the same day as patient admission. The coder ensures compliance with coding guidelines and regulations while maintaining high standards of accuracy and efficiency.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Coding Analysis: Carefully review medical records, operative reports, and other documentation to ensure accurate procedure and diagnosis coding.
  • Coding Standards Compliance: Apply ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes according to coding guidelines and payer requirements.
  • Clinical Collaboration: Work closely with clinical staff to clarify documentation when necessary to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Code Knowledge Updates: Stay up-to-date on changes in coding standards, regulations, and best practices to maintain compliance and enhance coding accuracy.
  • Clinical Education: Provide education and support to clinical staff on proper documentation practices and coding requirements.
  • Reporting Support: Assist in preparing reports related to coding accuracy, productivity, and compliance.

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Educational Background and Certification: A bachelor's degree in health information management or a related field is preferred. CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), or similar certification is also preferred.
  • Experience and Skills: Minimum 4 years of experience in medical coding, with specific experience in same-day surgery coding preferred. Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and surgical procedures. Proficient in coding software and electronic health record systems. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
