As a resident, you will work closely with experienced surgeons to develop your skills in preoperative assessment, intraoperative support, and postoperative care. You will have the opportunity to work on complex cases and contribute to the development of new surgical techniques.
- Preoperative Assessment: Conduct thorough medical histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests to determine the best course of treatment for patients undergoing cardiovascular or thoracic surgery.
- Intraoperative Support: Assist the surgical team during procedures by providing direct patient care, monitoring vital signs, administering medications, managing equipment, and maintaining a sterile environment.
- Postoperative Care and Monitoring: Closely monitor patients in the immediate postoperative period, assessing vital signs, cardiac rhythms, pain management, and potential complications such as bleeding, infection, or respiratory distress.
- Wound Care and Dressing Changes: Provide wound care and manage surgical incisions, drains, and chest tubes, performing dressing changes and assessing wound healing.
- Cardiovascular and Respiratory Monitoring: Monitor cardiovascular and respiratory status closely, including ECG monitoring, arterial blood gas analysis, and oxygen saturation monitoring, recognizing and responding to changes in patient status promptly.
- Pain Management: Assess and manage pain in postoperative patients using pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, collaborating with the healthcare team to develop individualized pain management plans.
- Patient and Family Education: Educate patients and families about postoperative care, medications, activity restrictions, dietary guidelines, and signs and symptoms of complications, supporting patients and families in coping with the surgical experience and promoting self-care and recovery.
