Purpose of Role

A Composites Methods Engineer specializes in the design, development, and manufacturing processes of composite materials. They ensure that composite materials are effectively integrated into product designs and manufactured efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop methods for the design and manufacturing of composite materials for components and structures.
  • Work with design teams to ensure composite materials meet the necessary structural, thermal, and durability requirements.
  • Evaluate and analyze product designs for manufacturability and suggest design changes to optimize the use of composite materials.
  • Generate CAD models, technical drawings, and tooling designs for composite components.
  • Provide recommendations to improve product designs focusing on manufacturability and material performance.

Material Selection and Testing

  • Research and select appropriate composite materials for different applications.
  • Perform material testing, including tensile compression, and fatigue testing to verify that selected materials meet the required standards and specifications.
  • Develop test methods for evaluating the performance of composite structures under various conditions.
  • Analyze and interpret test data to refine material choices and process parameters.

Manufacturing Process Development and Optimization

  • Develop and improve composite manufacturing processes, such as resin infusion, vacuum bagging, prepreg, and autoclaving.
  • Optimize production methods to ensure efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and high-quality.
  • Create work instructions and technical documentation to guide manufacturing teams in the production of composite materials.
  • Work closely with production teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to composite manufacturing.

Tooling and Equipment Management

  • Design and develop tooling, jigs, and fixtures required for the manufacture of composite components.
  • Coordinate the procurement and maintenance of specialized equipment for composite manufacturing, such as autoclaves, vacuum systems, and CNC machines.
  • Evaluate tooling designs and make recommendations for improvement based on production feedback.

Quality Control and Assurance

  • Develop and implement quality control processes to ensure that composite materials and components meet industry standards, such as AS9100 for aerospace.
  • Inspect and validate composite parts and structures during and after manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with quality assurance teams to create inspection protocols and ensure compliance with safety and performance standards.
  • Conduct failure analysis on defective parts and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Project Management and Collaboration

  • Manage projects related to composite material development from concept to final production.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including designers, engineers, and production staff, to meet project goals and timelines.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing teams during the production process.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate project progress and outcomes to stakeholders.

Research and Innovation

  • Stay updated on emerging trends and technologies in composite materials and manufacturing methods.
  • Conduct research on new materials, fabrication techniques, and potential applications for composites in the industry.
  • Experiment with advanced composites and nanomaterials to improve product performance and reduce weight.
  • Explore automation and digital technologies, such as additive manufacturing and robotics, in composite manufacturing.

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure that all composite materials and processes comply with industry regulations and safety standards.
  • Develop and implement health and safety procedures related to the handling and processing of composite materials.
  • Ensure that the manufacturing processes adhere to environmental regulations and sustainability initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Indepth knowledge of composite materials and processes, such as resin infusion, vacuum bagging, prepreg, and autoclaving.
  • Proficiency in CAD software, such as CATIA and SolidWorks, and simulation tools, such as FEA.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing techniques, tools, and equipment for composites.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot production issues.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, such as AS9100 and ISO 9001, and compliance regulations.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials science, manufacturing engineering, or a related field.
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in a related field (optional but beneficial for advanced roles and R&D positions).
