Key Responsibilities of a Senior Manager

The Senior Manager will lead the design and engineering of EHV substations and transmission lines.

Our ideal candidate should have strong technical skills and be able to:

  • Conduct System Studies:
    • Detailed load flow, short circuit analysis, voltage drop calculations, reactive power compensation, and harmonic analysis to ensure stability and reliability of the power system.
    • Design overall configuration of EHV substation, including arrangement of transformers, busbars, circuit breakers, isolators, and other critical high-voltage components.
    • Incorporate redundancy, protection, and fail-safe mechanisms in the design to enhance system reliability and minimize risk of outages.
  • Develop Detailed Electrical Designs:
    • Comprehensive single line diagrams that clearly define electrical connections and arrangements of all major equipment in the substation.
    • Specifications for all major electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, reactors, and capacitors, ensuring compliance with project requirements and standards.
    • Cable sizes based on current-carrying capacity, voltage drop, and thermal constraints.
    • Efficient cable routing plans that minimize interference and optimize installation.
    • An effective earthing and bonding system for the substation, ensuring personnel safety, equipment protection, and compliance with local regulations.
  • Lead Primary Engineering:
    • Layout and connections for high-voltage equipment such as power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, current and voltage transformers, and surge arresters.
    • Busbar systems with considerations for thermal performance, electrical stress, and mechanical stability.
    • Interconnection schemes for integrating multiple substations or tie-lines into existing power grid.
  • Develop Secondary Engineering:
    • Comprehensive protection schemes, including differential, distance, overcurrent, and earth fault protection, ensuring fast and reliable fault detection and isolation.
    • Control logic and schemes for automation, including operation of circuit breakers, isolators, and other switchgear.
    • Metering and instrumentation systems required for accurate monitoring and billing.
  • Select Equipment and Design:
    • Transformer ratings considering factors such as load growth, fault levels, efficiency, and cooling requirements.
    • Ratings for circuit breakers, switchgear, and other protective devices, ensuring they can safely interrupt fault currents without compromising system integrity.
    • Capacitor banks for reactive power compensation and reactors for controlling over-voltages or for current limiting in the substation.
  • Integrate with Renewable Energy Systems:
    • Interfaces for connection of utility-scale renewable energy systems (e.g., solar, wind) to transmission grid, considering voltage levels, harmonics, and stability.
    • Proper coordination between EHV equipment and inverters or converters used in renewable energy systems.
  • Provide Owner's Engineering Services:
    • Technical advisor to project owner, providing expert guidance on all aspects of EHV substation and transmission line design, construction, and commissioning.
    • Review and approve design documents, drawings, and calculations provided by contractors or third-party consultants to ensure compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and best practices.
  • Conduct Equipment Design Reviews:
    • Thorough technical evaluation of vendor proposals, including equipment specifications, performance data, and compliance with project requirements.
    • Review and validate equipment designs provided by vendors/OEMs to ensure they comply with project's technical specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
    • Detailed design validations, including reviewing engineering drawings, schematics, and technical data sheets.
    • Verify materials and components specified by vendor, ensuring they meet required durability, reliability, and performance standards.
  • Ensure Compliance and Standards Adherence:
    • All designs comply with international and national standards such as IS, IEC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, and regional grid codes.
  • Implement Innovative Design Solutions:
    • Stay abreast of emerging technologies in EHV systems, such as digital substations, gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), and advanced protection relays, and incorporate them into designs where applicable.
    • Balance cost-efficiency with performance, exploring options such as modular construction, prefabricated substations, and standardized components.
  • Maintain Quality Assurance:
    • Rigorous design reviews and cross-discipline checks to identify and rectify any potential issues early in the design process.
    • Comprehensive design documentation, including technical reports, design calculations, and as-built drawings.
  • Coordinate with Civil and Structural Design:
    • Civil engineers to design appropriate foundations for high-voltage equipment, considering factors such as weight, vibrations, and seismic conditions.
    • Structural design supports electrical design, providing adequate clearances, accessibility, and safety measures.
