Supply Chain Professional Overview

The role of the Supply Chain Manager is pivotal in overseeing end-to-end supply chain functions for a manufacturing entity. Key responsibilities include:

  • Production planning and control (PPC) encompassing production scheduling.
  • Plant sourcing, encompassing raw material planning as well as indirect sourcing at the plant.
  • Plant stores (RM and FG warehousing), logistics, and scrap management.
  • Plant Supply Chain data, MIS and projects management.

A Supply Chain Manager oversees planning, procurement, production scheduling, inventory, and logistics to ensure efficient, cost-effective manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities and Expectations

  1. Production Planning & Scheduling
    1. Align material availability with the production plan to ensure zero downtime.
    2. Collaborate with production, sales, and central planning teams for demand forecasting and capacity planning.
    3. Monitor daily and weekly production plans and adjust schedules to meet customer delivery commitments.
  2. Procurement & Supplier Coordination
    1. Ensure timely procurement of raw materials, packaging materials, and consumables.
    2. Coordinate with central procurement and approved vendors to track purchase orders, delivery timelines, and quality compliance.
  3. Inventory Management
    1. Maintain optimal inventory levels of raw materials, WIP, and finished goods.
    2. Monitor stock ageing, non-moving inventory, and initiate timely disposal or consumption plans.
    3. Ensure regular physical stock audits and reconciliation with system records.
  4. Warehousing & Logistics
    1. Oversee inbound and outbound logistics to ensure OTIF (On-Time-In-Full) deliveries.
    2. Manage warehouse operations, space utilization, and storage safety.
    3. Ensure proper documentation, dispatch scheduling, and coordination with transporters.
  5. Cost & Process Optimization
    1. Identify and implement initiatives to reduce logistics, inventory carrying, and procurement costs.
    2. Drive process improvements using lean, Kaizen, or Six Sigma methodologies.
    3. Track and improve key SCM KPIs like inventory turnover, delivery accuracy, and material yield.
  6. Compliance & Safety
    1. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and uphold operational excellence.
    2. Conduct regular training and audits to uphold safety and operational standards.
  7. Team Leadership & Development
    1. Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing supply chain team.
    2. Define clear roles, responsibilities, and development plans for the team.
    3. Foster collaboration, ownership, and continuous improvement mindset.
