Job Title: Surgical Procedure Coder Specialist

Department: Medical Coding and Revenue Cycle Operations

The role of a Surgical Procedure Coder Specialist is to accurately assign codes for surgical procedures performed on the same day as the patient's admission, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and payer requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Accurate Code Assignment: Review and analyze medical records, operative reports, and other documentation to ensure accurate coding of procedures and diagnoses.
  • Code Updates: Stay updated on changes in coding standards, regulations, and best practices to maintain compliance and enhance coding accuracy.
  • Coding Accuracy Enhancement: Implement strategies to improve coding accuracy, including reviewing and revising code assignments as necessary.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with clinical staff to clarify documentation when necessary to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Education and Support: Provide education and support to clinical staff regarding proper documentation practices and coding requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in health information management or related field preferred.
  • Certification: Certification as a CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), or similar credential is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 4 years of experience in medical coding, with specific experience in surgical procedure coding preferred.
  • Skill Set: Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and surgical procedures.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in coding software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Soft Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
