Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Site Reliability Engineer to join our Information Systems (IS) team. This role offers an exciting opportunity for an automation enthusiast to build a career with a global technology leader and drive the success of those leveraging open source products.

The IS team supports and maintains all of our IT production services, including running services used by over 60 million users. As a Site Reliability Engineer, you'll be in a unique position to drive operations automation to the next level, both in our private clouds and public clouds.

You will define infrastructure as code using best-of-breed open source tools, software development practices such as CI/CD pipelines, and our leading products for software operation automation. Additionally, you will improve our products and open-source technologies by providing critical feedback to developers on how their products operate at scale.

This is a remote role available in any timezone. You'll work collaboratively with a global team of SREs who support each other to provide exceptional services to our customers and the Ubuntu community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement infrastructure as code practice within IS, increasing automation and improving IaC processes.
  • Automate software operations for re-usability and consistency across private and public clouds, considering the complexities of distributed systems.
  • Develop new features and improve the resilience and scalability of our cloud and container portfolio.
  • Maintain operational responsibility for all of our core services, networks, and infrastructure.
  • Design, implement, and maintain monitoring and alerting for various systems and services using observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch.
  • Collaborate with development teams to design service architecture, documentation, playbooks, policies, and operational procedures.
Requirements
  • A deep understanding of defining operations in code using version control, peer review, and CI/CD to roll out changes.
  • Strong modern engineering background with experience in Python software development, large projects, Linux networking, routing, and firewalls.
  • Affinity with various forms of Linux storage and hands-on experience administering enterprise Linux servers.
  • Extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies, including practical knowledge of Linux storage.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively in English over email, chat, video or voice calls, and in-person.
  • Motivated and able to troubleshoot from kernel to web, and willing to ask others when appropriate.
  • A willingness to be flexible and learn new things quickly, and passionate about open-source technology.
