Design Engineer Estimation

Develop timely and accurate cost estimations to drive business acquisition efforts.

Job Description

As a Design Engineer in estimation, you will play a critical role in developing cost estimates that support business acquisition efforts. Your expertise in mechanical/manufacturing engineering principles, combined with your knowledge of casting and machining processes, will enable you to prepare accurate cost estimates for castings, machining, tooling, and gauges based on customer drawings and specifications.

Additionally, you will develop preliminary BOM (Bill of Materials) and process flow diagrams to support quotation accuracy. You will work closely with application engineers and marketing to ensure estimates meet customer requirements and timelines.

In this role, you will be responsible for conducting Technical Feasibility Studies (TFS) as part of the estimation process. You will lead and facilitate TFS meetings with cross-functional teams (engineering, SCM, quality, operations) and document findings, integrating them into the estimation package for customer quotations.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Strong foundation in mechanical/manufacturing engineering principles.
  • Familiarity with casting and machining processes (foundry background is an advantage).
  • Proficiency in CAD tools (Creo, NX, SolidWorks) with awareness of CFD/FEA/CAM applications.
  • Analytical and numerical skills to evaluate cost drivers.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills – ability to work across departments and support customer-facing teams.
  • Curiosity for digital transformation, AI, and simulation-based methods in estimation.
Key Responsibilities
  • Review customer drawings and specifications to identify manufacturing feasibility.
  • Estimate cycle times, material utilization, tooling requirements, and process costs.
  • Release accurate budget quotes within agreed timelines to support marketing efforts.
  • Conduct and head TFS meetings, capturing cross-functional inputs into the estimation.
  • Document assumptions, risks, and cost drivers in estimation reports.
  • Engage with cross-functional teams to validate estimates against actuals and drive learning.
