Job Summary:
The Medical Coding Specialist is responsible for accurately assigning diagnosis and procedure codes from medical records. This role requires a strong grasp of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assign correct diagnosis and procedure codes from medical records in accordance with official coding guidelines.
- Ensure coding accuracy and compliance with AAPC / AHIMA standards.
- Work on various specialties such as E/M, Surgery, Radiology, IPDRG, ED, or Anesthesia as per project requirements.
- Review denied claims and update codes based on payer feedback.
- Meet productivity and accuracy benchmarks.
- Collaborate with QA and billing teams to resolve coding discrepancies or queries.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in any field, preferably Life Sciences, Paramedical, or Allied Health.
- Certification (mandatory): AAPC or AHIMA certification – CPC, COC, CCS, or equivalent.
- Experience:
- Freshers with valid certification can apply.
- 1–3 years' experience in outpatient, inpatient, or specialty coding preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding guidelines.
- Exposure to tools like 3M, Optum Encoder, TruCode, or EHRs like Epic/Cerner is an asset.
- Accuracy, attention to detail, analytical, problem-solving abilities, communication, documentation skills, and understanding of RCM workflow and HIPAA compliance are essential.
