Database specialists play a critical role in creating, maintaining and enhancing database systems. They are responsible for ensuring the security and optimal performance of databases that support business operations. Their work involves collaborating with application teams, system administrators, project stakeholders to ensure that database systems are robust, scalable, aligned with organisational objectives. Key Responsibilities

Database strategy & architecture:

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of scalable secure database solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with IT and development teams to support the development of reliable efficient database architectures.

Database administration & maintenance:

  • Manage and maintain operational health of production and non-production databases.
  • Perform routine database maintenance tasks such as backups indexing archiving and patching.
  • Implement and regularly test disaster recovery plans.

Security & compliance:

  • Ensure database security through role-based access control encryption secure configurations.
  • Monitor for unauthorized access or unusual activity.
  • Support compliance initiatives by ensuring databases adhere to relevant regulatory standards.

Performance tuning & optimization:

  • Analyse database workloads to identify and address performance bottlenecks.
  • Optimise SQL queries indexes execution plans for better efficiency.
  • Participate in capacity planning and help forecast database scaling needs.

Database deployment & integration:

  • Coordinate the deployment of database updates patches schema changes.
  • Support database migration and integration efforts across systems and applications.
  • Assist with cloud platform integrations.

Database monitoring & reporting:

  • Implement and manage monitoring tools to track database performance.
  • Generate routine health check reports.
  • Provide input into database performance dashboards and reporting tools.

Documentation & best practices:

  • Maintain accurate documentation for database configurations and maintenance procedures.
  • Follow and contribute to database management policies and operational standards.

Collaboration with business teams:

  • Work closely with business and application teams to understand data requirements.
  • Ensure databases are structured to support reporting analytics business intelligence tools.
