Unisys Mainframe Database Administrator

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the efficient installation, configuration, and administration of DMSII databases.
  • Monitor database performance, space utilization, and availability on Unisys mainframes to guarantee optimal operation.
  • Effectively manage sets, subsets, and indexes to ensure swift data access.
  • Handle database backups, journals, and roll-forward recovery procedures to prevent data loss.
  • Support schema changes and perform database reorganizations as required to maintain system integrity.
  • Assist in capacity planning and ensure data integrity across environments by analyzing performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with application and system teams to troubleshoot performance or access issues through detailed analysis and resolution.
  • Participate in disaster recovery testing and ensure compliance with backup policies to safeguard critical data.
  • Implement and maintain robust security, audit trails, and user access controls to protect sensitive information.
  • Document DBA processes, configuration, and recovery procedures to facilitate knowledge sharing and smooth operations.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proven expertise in Unisys DMSII database administration, including hands-on experience with DMUTILITY and DMSUPPORT tools.
  • Strong understanding of journaling, quiet point backups, and roll-forward recovery procedures.
  • Experience in performance tuning and troubleshooting database issues, ensuring seamless system operation.
  • Familiarity with COBOL, ALGOL, or other Unisys mainframe application integration, facilitating effective collaboration with development teams.
  • Knowledge of batch jobs, JCL equivalents, and operational support tasks, enabling efficient system maintenance.
  • BASIC EXPERIENCE IN ODBC/JDBC INTEGRATION WITH DMSII (NICE TO HAVE), providing additional value in modern system integration.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, demonstrating a strong foundation in IT principles.
  • 3–5 years of proven experience as a DMSII DBA or Unisys Mainframe DBA, showcasing expertise and dedication to the role.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, essential for effective collaboration and issue resolution.
  • Willingness to work in rotational support shifts (if required), demonstrating adaptability and a commitment to system uptime.

Nice to Have:

  • Exposure to modernization projects (migrating from DMSII to RDBMS/cloud), providing valuable experience in system evolution.
  • Knowledge of SQL/relational databases for cross-skill flexibility, enabling adaptation to diverse system environments.
  • Experience in automation scripts for monitoring or DBA tasks, enhancing system efficiency and reducing manual effort.
