IBM MQ z/OS System Programmer

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced professional to administer and support IBM MQ Series and File Transfer Edition (FTE) on the z/OS platform. The ideal candidate will ensure a secure, reliable, and high-performing messaging infrastructure that supports enterprise applications and batch processes.

This role demands deep technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate across teams to maintain mission-critical systems.

Main Responsibilities
  • MQ Administration: Install, configure, and maintain IBM MQ Series and MQ FTE on z/OS.
  • MQ Object Management: Manage MQ objects including queue managers, queues, channels, and cluster configurations.
  • MQ Performance Monitoring: Monitor MQ performance and availability, applying tuning techniques to optimize throughput and reduce latency.
Upgrade Support
  • Upgrade Planning: Plan and execute upgrades of MQ Series and FTE components on z/OS.
  • Compatibility Checks: Conduct compatibility checks, regression testing, and rollback planning.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams to ensure minimal disruption during upgrades.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed documentation and version control records for upgrades.
Security & Compliance
  • MQ Security Protocols: Implement and manage MQ security protocols including TLS/SSH certificates, RACF integration, and security exits.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with organizational and industry standards for secure messaging environments.
System Programming & Integration
  • MQ Integration: Support integration of MQ with z/OS subsystems including CICS, DB2, and IMS.
  • Automation Scripts: Develop and maintain automation scripts using REXX, JCL, or Assembler for MQ operations.
Disaster Recovery & High Availability
  • Queue Sharing Groups: Design and implement MQ Queue Sharing Groups and RESLEVEL configurations for high availability.
  • Disaster Recovery Planning: Contribute to disaster recovery planning, testing, and failover strategies for MQ environments.
Collaboration & Support
  • Troubleshooting: Partner with developers, infrastructure teams, and support staff to troubleshoot and resolve MQ-related issues.
  • Technical Guidance: Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing within the team.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Technical Expertise: 8+ years of hands-on experience with IBM MQ on z/OS.
  • MQ Knowledge: Deep understanding of MQ Queue Sharing Groups, FTE configurations, and MQ monitoring tools.
  • Languages: Proficiency in COBOL, REXX, JCL, and related language tools.
Soft Skills
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
