About BHS
Basic Healthcare Services (BHS) is a not-for-profit organization with a vision of a world where marginalized and vulnerable communities lead a healthy life with dignity. The organization runs a network of AMRIT Clinics that provide high-quality and low-cost primary health care to rural and tribal communities in south Rajasthan.
Six such clinics serve a population of nearly 100,000, approximately 90% of which is tribal. BHS is a leading voice on primary healthcare in India and also conducts implementation research aimed at strengthening the public health systems. For more details, visit www.bhs.org.in
BHS is incubating a Center for Primary Health Care to generate knowledge; build partnerships and strengthen advocacy for improving healthcare of the marginalized.
RA, Nutrition and Early Child Development
In response to high levels of child malnutrition in the communities we serve, BHS set up a network of day-care centers that provide nutrition, stimulation and healthcare to children from 6 months to five years. Called Phulwaris, these centers have been very effective in reducing malnutrition and improving cognition levels.
BHS now plans to strengthen the ECD, and to assess the impact of Phulwaris on nutrition and cognition, as an action research. We are looking for a young public health nutrition/child development professional to anchor the research.
RA, Adolescent Health:
As part of the comprehensive primary healthcare, BHS provides reproductive and sexual health care to women of reproductive age-group. Based on realization that while adolescent girls in the communities we serve have many health needs, they are often not able to access healthcare with dignity. The proposed RA will anchor a research study to understand health needs of adolescent girls and response of health systems and societies to their needs.
The study will help us to design and to recalibrate our own services to become more responsive, and to guide health systems for becoming more “adolescent” friendly

Qualifications and Skills:
For Research Assistant (RA), Nutrition and Early Child Development (ECD):
An ideal candidate will have a formal training in public health nutrition/ child development; and in health research. She would have a research experience of 1-2 years and would have basic proficiency in qualitative and quantitative methods.
For Research Assistant (RA), Adolescent Health :
An ideal candidate will have a formal training in public health / anthropology; and in health research. Those with experience in research on health of adolescent girls from marginalized communities will be preferred. She would have a research experience of 1-2 years and would have basic proficiency in qualitative and quantitative methods.
What we offer?
Besides a remuneration that is benchmarked to other grassroots organization, BHS provides a stimulating and learning environment. The RAs will also join a cohort of research cohort, trained by faculty at Center for Healthcare, Indian Institute of Management. Earlier RAs jointly mentored by IIMU and BHS have gone on to secure PhDs in some of the top programs, and in fulfilling positions with action oriented organizations, including with BHS.
