Senior Backend Engineer

Backend Software Engineer PositionAt our fast-growing, venture-backed health technology startup, we are building AI-driven products for revenue cycle management. Our team is scaling quickly and looking for a talented Backend Software Engineer who can design, build and maintain scalable backend services.This role is ideal for someone who enjoys owning systems end to end and working across multiple technologies. You will have the opportunity to work on meaningful problems in healthcare and collaborate with a senior, highly technical team.Design, build and maintain scalable backend services using Python (FastAPI and Flask)Architect and implement high-performance, async FastAPI endpoints for healthcare billing analysisDesign and maintain RESTful APIs with clear, consistent contracts and strong API design principlesManage and optimize SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL or similar), including schema design, complex queries, indexing, transactions, and query optimizationBuild data processing pipelines for healthcare EDI files (835, 837) and other structured dataDevelop cloud-native solutions on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including:Cloud Run for containerized deploymentsCloud SQL for managed databasesCloud Storage for object storageCloud Functions, Pub/Sub and related services for pipelines and messagingImplement authentication and authorization (JWT, OAuth2) and security best practices across servicesContribute to DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation (Docker, Terraform or similar)Set up and improve logging, monitoring and error tracking, and troubleshoot production issuesSupport frontend components with Next.js and React when needed (not the primary focus)Collaborate on Golang-based projects such as parsers, system tools or desktop utilitiesMaintain and enhance desktop applications built with Fyne (Windows and macOS)Optimize API response times and overall system performanceWrite clean, maintainable and well-documented code with strong unit and integration test coverage (pytest, etc.)Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions and continuous improvement of our systemsRequired Skills and Experience:2–4 years of professional software development experience (3+ years of backend-focused experience strongly preferred)Strong proficiency in Python with FastAPI and/or FlaskProven track record of building and deploying production-grade backend systemsSolid SQL expertise and experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQLUnderstanding of database indexing, transactions and performance optimizationHands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform, ideally including:Cloud RunCloud SQLCloud StoragePub/Sub or similar servicesFamiliarity with GCP networking and IAM conceptsExperience with ORMs (for example SQLAlchemy)Understanding of API authentication and authorization patterns (JWT, OAuth2)Knowledge of containerization and deployment best practices with DockerFamiliarity with DevOps practices including CI/CD, deployment and monitoringBasic or intermediate knowledge of Next.js and React.jsComfortable with Git and collaborative development workflowsPreferred Skills (Huge Plus):Proficiency in Golang for backend services, parsers or system toolsExperience with the Fyne framework for desktop apps on Windows and macOSPrior work with EDI file parsing, data pipelines or automation in healthcare or fintechExperience with healthcare data standards such as HL7, EDI and FHIRKnowledge of data warehouse solutions such as BigQuery or similar toolsExperience with message queues such as Pub/Sub, RabbitMQ or RedisFamiliarity with WebSocket implementations for real-time featuresKnowledge of caching strategies (Redis, Memcached or similar)Experience with API documentation tools such as OpenAPI/SwaggerExperience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code (Terraform or similar)Experience with data processing libraries such as Pandas and NumPyData Structures and Algorithms proficiencyGoogle Cloud Platform certifications (Professional Cloud Architect, Professional Cloud Developer, Associate Cloud Engineer, etc.)How We Work:Strong problem-solving and debugging abilitiesSystems thinking – you understand how components interact and scaleClear communication – you can explain technical decisions and document systemsOwnership mindset – you take responsibility from design to production and follow throughPerformance consciousness – you care about efficiency and real-world behavior of your codeSecurity awareness – you understand common vulnerabilities and best practicesAdaptable and proactive across different tech stacksContinuous learner who stays current with backend technologies and cloud servicesWhy Join Us:Fast-paced startup where your work has immediate, visible impactOpportunity to work across multiple layers of the stack: backend, cloud, DevOps, frontend and desktopRemote-first culture with ownership of deliverables and autonomy in how you workChance to shape the architecture and foundation of a high-traction Silicon Valley health-tech startupWork closely with a senior, highly technical team on meaningful problems in healthcare
