Job Description About our group: The Head Disk Mechanical Team integrates heads and media for developing the next generation Seagate perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) and Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) products. We work with Seagate design centers and component centers around the world to stage novel head disc media interfacial technologies to improve the tribological performance, areal density, and reliability of PMR and HAMR Hard Disc Drives (HDDs). About the role - you will: - Gain foundational knowledge of HDDs, recording subsystems, and future technologies - Gain understanding of collaborative effort with cross-functional teams including materials science, mechanical design, test software, and reliability engineering - Participate in engineering and training activities with HDM team members, for example, HDD bench testing and data analysis - Perform a variety of experiments in the lab using bench instruments, computer software, Python code, signal processing, and oscilloscopes, atomic force microscopes (AFM), and optical surface analyzers - Help with running experiments that enable integration novel head and media technologies to improve the tribology of PMR and HAMR head disk interfaces - Data analysis using Python, JMP, Matlab, Minitab and MS Excel - Perform drive measurements, integration testing, and data analysis - Document findings and present results in technical reports and team meetings About you: - Uphold key Seagate values of integrity, inclusion, and innovation - Excellent communication and teamwork abilities - Ability to communicate and collaborate with global and cross functional teams - Adaptable in fast-paced, multi-priority environments - Detail-oriented, results-driven, and able to work independently - Hands-on problem solver - Effective communicator with robust interpersonal skills - Highly motivated and self-directed. Work effectively with teams, while taking initiative and executing on independent tasks to generate results Your experience includes: - Basic computer & presentation skills - Intermediate technical background in computer programming or data analysis or experimental work - GPA 3.0 or above - Familiar with basic data analysis, running experiments, operating laboratory instruments, and preparing technical reports - Programming and debugging experience - Experience with characterization and analytical instruments like atomic force microscopes and scanning electron microscopes is a plus. - Current student pursuing a BS or MS degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science, chemical Engineering or equivalent, and returning to classes in Fall 2026 You might also have: - MATLAB or Python experience is a plus - Competency in MS office applications - Experience with statistical analysis - Experience with tribology, surface chemistry, lubrication, contamination control, material characterization (AFM, electron microscopes), and thin films is a plus Location: Our Shakopee campus is located 25 minutes southwest of Minneapolis in a setting with a rural vibe - it overlooks a horse racing track and stables, yet it has great entertainment venues close by as well. With wide-open spaces, the campus has plenty of space for running, biking, shooting some hoops or playing volleyball over lunch. The estimated base wage range for this position is $24 - $35/hr. The individual base wage is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. The benefits for this position are based on a 24 to 40-hour-per-week schedule for a full calendar year and may differ depending on work location and tenure with the Company.
