This role is a mix of strategy and execution: you set direction and build a strong, healthy team while also staying close enough to the technology to roll up your sleeves, dive into code or architecture, and unblock the team when needed. This is a true player-coach position: you re accountable for people, process, and outcomes, but you also lead by example through direct technical contribution. You will report to the Senior Director of Engineering in this role. What you'll do On any given day, you might: - Lead People: Recruit, mentor, and grow a diverse team of platform engineers. Foster a culture built on collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. - Coach Technically: Provide hands-on guidance in design, architecture, and implementation. Be the person who can jump in, pair program, or review a tricky PR to help the team move forward. - Plan & Execute: Drive critical initiatives from idea to delivery. Balance long-term platform health with short-term needs, and ensure reliable, high-quality outcomes. - Shape Vision: Define and evolve platform capabilities to support future growth. Keep the roadmap aligned with company goals while looking around corners for what's next. - Build Operational Excellence: Design and maintain scalable, reliable, and secure systems. Use metrics and postmortems to continuously raise the bar. - Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner with Product, Design, Security, and other Engineering teams to embed platform thinking into every stage of development. - Architect for the Future: Set the technical North Star and guide design choices for key services and components. What you bring - 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 35 years in engineering management. - Proven player-coach track record: able to lead people and teams while still making hands-on contributions to code, architecture, or design. - Technical expertise in platform domains such as authentication, authorization, identity management, and multi-channel notifications. - Experience designing and running distributed systems and multi-tenant SaaS platforms on modern cloud providers (preferably Google Cloud Platform). - J Hands-on expertise across the stack: designing microservices in Python and Elixir (GraphQL, REST, gRPC), building React/TypeScript frontends, managing data with PostgreSQL and Cloud Storage, scaling with Redis and Pub/Sub, and implementing observability with Cloud Logging, Monitoring, and Sentry. - A history of recruiting and retaining great engineers, while fostering an inclusive and collaborative culture. - Operational mindset: monitoring, alerting, incident response, and building systems that meet strict SLAs/SLOs. - Strong communication and influencing skills you can translate technical tradeoffs into clear options for business partners. - Comfort with on-call participation, ensuring business-critical systems get timely attention.
