Job Description – State & Local Tax (SALT) - Manager

Role Summary

Our tech‑forward tax practice is building a State & Local Tax (SALT) team to support venture‑backed tech start‑ups, investment funds and high‑net‑worth individuals. We are looking for a SALT Manager with 10+ years of experience who will design, build and lead this function end‑to‑end. The candidate will leverage deep multi‑state expertise and strong process-building skills to develop a best-in-class operation.

Key Responsibilities

- Build the SALT team from the ground up: Design the operating model, hire and train 3–5 support staff, and implement the infrastructure to scale.
- Drive high-quality compliance: Ensure detailed review, timely and accurate state and local income/franchise, gross receipts, and other tax return filings for entities and individuals.
- Develop and implement SOPs: Standardize processes for recurring returns, notice response, apportionment reviews, and nexus analyses.
- Own cross-functional collaboration: Partner with client service, product, and engineering teams to integrate tax workflows with internal systems.
- Provide SALT advisory services: Support clients with nexus determinations, apportionment planning, and state-level structuring and planning.
- Stay current on changing laws: Monitor state and local tax legislative and regulatory updates to ensure compliance and proactively advise clients.
- Build a culture of quality and accountability: Implement review standards, maintain audit defensibility, and build in process checkpoints.

Ideal Candidate Profile

- 10+ years of progressive experience in state and local tax compliance and consulting.
- Proven ability to lead and scale a SALT function, ideally in a high-growth or tech-enabled environment.
- Strong technical SALT knowledge across entity-level and individual tax types, including familiarity with venture-backed and investment fund structures.
- Excellent communicator with experience translating tax nuances to cross-functional and non-tax audiences.
- Background in Big 4 or Global 7 firm preferred; experience with fast-paced startups a plus.
- EA, CPA, CA, JD, or MST preferred.
