They're key contact professionals for businesses experiencing major events, such as an emergency, leadership changes, or significant business announcements. They communicate key messages related to the announcement or event and may act as a spokesperson if a more suitable alternative is unavailable. These professionals work in both the public and private sectors and may perform the following duties:

- working with agencies and external partners to build relationships
- facilitating effective incident response during major events or issues by acting as a contact point for external agencies or personnel
- communicating with the public and stakeholders to provide updates and respond to questions
- preparing speeches and key talking points for press conferences or interviews
- developing written communications, such as reports, press releases, media releases, and statements
