The job typically includes:
1. **Maintenance and Inspection**: Performing regular maintenance checks and inspections to identify any potential issues or wear and tear on the crane. This includes checking hydraulic systems, engines, and electrical systems, as well as ensuring that all moving parts are lubricated and functioning correctly.

2. **Repair Work**: Diagnosing and fixing any issues that are found during inspections or reported by operators. This can involve anything from replacing worn-out parts to troubleshooting hydraulic systems and repairing electrical faults. The mechanic needs to be adept at using a variety of tools and equipment to perform repairs.

3. **Safety Compliance**: Ensuring that all work and the crane itself comply with local and national safety regulations. This includes ensuring that the crane is capable of safely performing the lifts it is required to do, and that all safety features are operational.

4. **Emergency Response**: Being available to respond to emergency breakdowns or issues that occur while the crane is in operation. This may require quick thinking and problem-solving to diagnose and fix issues in a high-pressure environment.

5. **Documentation**: Keeping detailed records of maintenance and repairs performed, as well as parts used. This is important for ensuring that the crane has a comprehensive service history and for planning future maintenance.

6. **Training**: Staying up-to-date with the latest technologies and techniques in crane maintenance and repair. This may involve attending training courses or workshops. The mechanic may also be responsible for training crane operators on proper pre-use inspections and minor maintenance tasks.

7. **Equipment Management**: Managing the inventory of spare parts and tools required for maintenance and repair tasks. This involves ordering new parts as necessary and ensuring that tools are maintained in good condition.

8. **Collaboration**: Working closely with crane operators, site managers, and other mechanics to coordinate maintenance schedules and ensure that cranes are available for use when needed.

The job requires a combination of technical knowledge, physical dexterity, and problem-solving skills. Mechanics must be able to work in various weather conditions and at heights, as they may need to climb the crane for inspections and repairs. Safety is a paramount concern in this role, so attention to detail and a commitment to following safety protocols are crucial.
