Optical Systems Engineer / Astronomer Role: Founding Optical Systems Engineer Type: Full time, In Person Location: Bangalore Compensation (CTC): INR 20-35L+ (Including ESOPs) Joining Date: January 2025 About the Role We're catching lasers from space to build the optical highway to the cosmos . Join us as an Optical Systems Engineer to design and optimize telescope systems, infrared optics, and precision instruments for satellite-to-ground communication links. You'll bridge optical design, astronomical instrumentation, and systems engineering to build hardware that works from lab bench to orbit. Responsibilities Design and optimize telescope systems for free-space optical communication (Cassegrain, Newtonian, custom configurations) Develop infrared optical systems and lens designs for 980nm and 1550nm wavelengths Characterize telescope performance: aberrations, wavefront quality, throughput, and pointing accuracy Perform optical system simulations using ray tracing and diffraction analysis (Zemax/CODE V) Design optical layouts for beam expanders, collimators, and receiver optics Conduct atmospheric turbulence analysis and adaptive optics system design Optimize optical link budgets considering atmospheric effects, telescope aperture, and detector sensitivity Perform precision alignment and testing using interferometry and wavefront sensors Integrate optical systems with mechanical mounts and tracking platforms Support field testing and outdoor optical link experiments Requirements B.Tech/M.Tech/M.Sc/PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Optical Engineering, or Physics Proficiency in optical design software (Zemax, CODE V, or similar) Strong understanding of geometrical and physical optics, aberration theory, and diffraction Experience with optical testing and characterization methods Knowledge of telescope designs and infrared optical systems Familiarity with optical testing equipment: interferometers, wavefront sensors, beam profilers Programming skills in Python/MATLAB for simulation and data analysis Ability to perform link budget calculations and system performance analysis Nice-to-Have Experience with free-space optical communication or laser communication systems Knowledge of atmospheric turbulence effects and error correction codes in optical systems Experience with optical ground stations or astronomical observatories Familiarity with satellite tracking and orbital mechanics Previous work with space-based optical systems What We Offer Opportunity to design telescope and optical systems for next-gen space communication World-class optical facilities and access to telescope infrastructure Fast-moving, high-ownership role with direct impact on product performance Founding Engineer equity How to Apply Send your resume and a brief note about your interests to:
