Role Summary We’re hiring asenior Commercial Property Underwriterwho is a true domain expert and can partner deeply withProduct Managers and engineersto build anAI-native underwriting workspace . This is not a traditional “just underwrite a book” role—your underwriting judgment becomes the backbone of the product: workflows, decision logic, data requirements, risk narratives, appetite rules, referral triggers, and model evaluation standards. You will help translate real underwriting into software:submission intake → triage → risk analysis → pricing/terms rationale → referrals → documentation → bind-ready output . What You’ll Own (Core Responsibilities)1) Underwriting Domain Leadership (Ground Truth)Act as the internal authority onCommercial Property underwritingacross key segments (MM/SMB/Specialty—based on our ICP). Define underwriting best practices for: COPE , valuation, occupancy hazards, protection class, BI/extra expense, deductible strategy CAT exposure basics (wind/hail/wildfire/flood) and accumulation considerations (as applicable) Common endorsements, exclusions, and coverage structures (as relevant to the market) Createdecision frameworks : appetite criteria, disqualifiers, risk scoring factors, referral rules, and documentation standards. Produce “ gold standard ” underwriting outputs: risk summary, file notes, quote narrative, and bind-ready package templates. 2) Product Collaboration (Build the Workspace)Partner with PMs to map current underwriting workflows into clear product requirements: Intake/checklists, submission completeness scoring, missing-info workflows, and follow-ups Triage and prioritization logic (what gets looked at first and why) Underwriter cockpit views: what data matters, in what order, with what confidence Write and reviewPRDs , user stories, acceptance criteria, and edge-case handling. Define theinformation architecture : how submissions, SOVs, loss runs, inspections, and broker emails should be organized and surfaced. 3) AI Enablement (Teach the System Underwriting)Help design and validate AI behaviors: Extraction accuracy (SOV fields, COPE, key exclusions, loss history) Risk narrative quality (what an underwriter would say vs generic summaries) Follow-up questions quality (what’s missing, what changes the decision) Createevaluation rubricsfor AI outputs (accuracy, completeness, usefulness, compliance, tone). Build and review “ truth sets ”: labeled examples, decision notes, reference outputs, and test cases. Work with engineering/ML teams on prompt specs, guardrails, confidence thresholds, and escalation triggers. 4) Pilot Execution & Feedback LoopsJoin customer discovery calls with underwriters/heads of underwriting to validate workflows. Run controlled pilot underwriting alongside customers and compare: AI-assisted vs manual effort, file quality, and decision consistency Translate feedback into prioritized product improvements. 5) Compliance, Governance & ExplainabilityEnsure outputs meet real-world underwriting expectations: traceable rationale, file audit readiness, consistent documentation. Define what must be logged and why (decisions, sources, assumptions, overrides). What Success Looks Like (90–180 Days)A crisp, documentedend-to-end underwriting workflowturned into product requirements. A high-quality library ofgold standard underwriting files(input → decision → rationale → follow-ups). AI output quality improves measurably against rubrics:higher extraction accuracy, better risk summaries, fewer dumb follow-ups . Customers say: “This feels like it was built by underwriters.” Required Qualifications7+ yearsunderwritingUS Commercial Property(carrier/MGA/program experience preferred). Strong command of submission analysis:applications, SOVs, COPE, loss runs, valuations, BI basics, inspections/engineering notes . Consistent ability to articulate underwriting decisions with clear, defensible rationale. Comfort working with ambiguity and building “how it should work” from scratch. Preferred QualificationsExperience with underwriting workbenches / policy admin tools, rating workflows, and broker submission intake. Exposure to CAT concepts/tools (even if not hands-on daily). Prior collaboration with product/ops teams on process redesign, underwriting guidelines, or tooling upgrades. Certifications: CPCU / ARM / AU (nice to have).
