MTS 2 Software Engineer – eBay About the Role At eBay, we’re redefining global commerce through technology. As a Staff Software Engineer, in Buyer Payments org you’ll design and build large-scale, distributed systems that power millions of customer interactions daily. You’ll shape technical strategy, drive innovation, and mentor engineers across teams to deliver seamless, performant, and accessible experiences for our global users. Responsibilities Architect and Build: Design, develop, and maintain scalable, distributed, and highly available systems that ensure exceptional performance, reliability, and accessibility for eBay’s marketplace platform.  Technical Leadership: Translate complex business requirements into clean, efficient, and maintainable software solutions. Take ownership of large functional areas, providing deep technical expertise and driving architectural direction.  Strategic Influence: Contribute to and influence technical strategy and long-term roadmaps, balancing immediate business needs with long-term engineering excellence.  Collaboration and Mentorship: Partner with cross-functional teams—including Product, Design, and Data Analytics —to build innovative solutions. Mentor engineers, conduct code reviews, and provide technical guidance across teams.  Quality and Velocity: Apply evidence-driven design principles to create testable, maintainable features that improve engineering velocity and support continuous delivery.  Operational Excellence: Lead release processes, on-call rotations, and site reliability initiatives for an “always-on” global commerce platform.  Continuous Improvement: Identify productivity bottlenecks, propose system improvements, and advocate for best practices in design and development.  Engineering Roadmap: Anticipate future changes and design with flexibility in mind to support evolving business and technical needs.  Qualifications Technical Skills Proven experience designing and delivering complex, distributed, and high-availability systems at scale.  Strong proficiency in multiple programming languages and frameworks, with deep expertise in at least one or two (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Scala, Python, or Node.js).  Experience influencing and executing technical strategy and architecture roadmaps, with a balance of short-term impact and long-term innovation.  Familiarity with Shift Left approaches and modern DevOps practices.  Experience leading cross-functional engineering initiatives and delivering large-scale software solutions end-to-end.  Experience 8+ years of professional experience in software development, with a track record of technical excellence and cross-team impact.  Demonstrated success leading the delivery of large, complex systems in fast-paced environments.  Education Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).  Soft Skills & Culture Fit Exceptional decision-making skills with the ability to navigate ambiguity and adapt to change.  Strong sense of ownership and accountability, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate across multiple divisions and stakeholders.  Passionate about mentoring, coaching, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.  Demonstrated ability to drive alignment and make high-impact technical decisions across teams.  Learning Mindset Curious, self-driven, and proactive about learning new technologies and industry trends.  Regularly participates in internal and external knowledge-sharing sessions.  Embraces a growth mindset, continuously seeking opportunities to expand skill sets and improve team capabilities.  Why Join eBay At eBay, your work touches millions of buyers and sellers around the world.
