A Pharmaceutical Business Development Manager (BDM) focuses on expanding a company's international market reach, particularly through deemed exports, by conducting market research, identifying new partnerships, developing business strategies, and negotiating contracts for regulatory and non-regulatory markets. Key responsibilities include building relationships with stakeholders, ensuring regulatory compliance, collaborating with internal teams, and driving growth through strategic alliances and client acquisition.
Core Responsibilities

  • Market Analysis & Strategy: Conduct thorough market research to identify emerging opportunities, understand regulatory landscapes, and analyze competitor activities in target international markets.
  • New Business Development: Proactively identify and secure new clients and business opportunities aligned with the company's objectives, focusing on areas like Contract Manufacturing Organization (CMO) or Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) services.
  • Strategic Partnerships & Alliances: Develop and maintain strong, long-term relationships with potential and existing partners, distributors, healthcare professionals, and regulatory authorities to foster strategic alliances and collaborations.
  • Negotiation & Contracts: Lead negotiations for complex commercial agreements, contracts, and long-term manufacturing collaborations, ensuring profitability, regulatory compliance, and intellectual property (IP) considerations are addressed.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Approvals: Oversee and ensure compliance with international regulations and standards, and facilitate the process of obtaining regulatory approvals for new products in key markets.
  • Internal Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams, such as marketing, regulatory affairs, R&D, and sales, to develop tailored solutions and ensure successful execution of business development initiatives.
  • Performance Monitoring & Reporting: Develop key performance indicators (KPIs), monitor business development activities, and provide regular reports on progress and outcomes to senior management.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy, Life Sciences, or a related field; an MBA or post-graduate degree in Marketing or International Business is often preferred. (2, 3)
  • Experience: Proven experience in pharmaceutical business development, with a strong track record in client acquisition and managing international markets. Experience in a CMO/CDMO environment is a significant advantage for some roles.
  • Skills:

  • Strong negotiation, communication, and presentation skills.

  • Strategic thinking and analytical capabilities.
  • Ability to analyze market data and develop actionable strategies.
  • Familiarity with pharmaceutical regulations and compliance.
  • Excellent relationship-building and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CRM software.
  • Willingness to travel internationally as required.
