BITS Design School Academic Fellow

BITS Design School is conceived and established by the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani), one of the first private institutes in India to be granted 'Institute of Eminence' status in 2020 by the Government of India. Inspired by the world's best, BITS Design School brings a bold, fresh, new approach to design studies in India beginning August 2024. We are looking to offer a unique opportunity to emerging design professionals who have a strong interest in design pedagogy to become a part of the academic team in its founding year. Academic Fellows will actively participate in institution building as well as be a part of real-world projects that are in their areas of interest. Fellows will be valued members of the intellectual community of the larger BITS family which includes a number of outstanding researchers, practitioners and entrepreneurs as well as a vibrant student community. Academic Fellows will be given an exposure to international partnerships and network opportunities with industry and academic professionals. They will also be encouraged to develop freelance or personal projects through campus facilities like labs, library resources and through mentorship. These resources would also be made available to those looking to work on their PhDs.


Research, Outreach and Projects:

The Academic Fellow will be expected to:

a) Engage in professional development as appropriate, carry forward research work that is synergic with the School and regularly update a subject-related knowledge base and support faculty with research and projects.

b) Assist in outreach, developing and setting up of projects; support student internship opportunities with guest lecturers and partners including communications, tracking progress, timelines and deliverables.

c) Co-create and execute research activities with faculty - including comprehensive surveys, literature reviews, and interdisciplinary data collection methods; Skillfully contribute to data analysis processes, enriching insights.

d) Ensure seamless communication across diverse stakeholders including industry and foreign institutional partners, fostering synergy and alignment towards shared objectives. Along with the program team, work to diligently uphold adherence to institutional policies and regulatory frameworks, cultivating a culture of compliance and excellence.


Teaching Support:

The Academic Fellow will be expected to:

a) To assist faculty members in activities related to course design and delivery in any of the institutional programmes. This includes help in preparation/revision of course content, reading material, class handouts, simulations, presentations, student assessments etc.

b) Liaisoning with the Program team to maintain student academic records and working with faculty to collect and distribute student assignments, assessments, grades, and feedback. To manage attendance, class participation marking and tabulation, setting up necessary teaching aids as instructed, tracking progress in class projects, assignments etc.

c) To provide student support including tutorials, portfolio guidance and remedial classes as required.

d) To participate in admissions processes including invigilation duties and attend pre-examination briefing and post examination debriefing by faculty.


Qualifications / Eligibility:

Candidates must have an undergraduate degree with 1 -2 years of work experience or a fresh postgraduate degree to apply. PhD scholars are also encouraged to apply. Qualifications in design or design-related fields are preferred. However, candidates with other qualifications with a demonstrable interest in design are also welcome to apply.

b) Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

c) Proficiency with technology tools and software applications commonly used in design education settings.

d) Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

e) Adaptability and flexibility to meet the diverse needs and expertise of faculty members.
