About the role:
We are looking for a Staff/ Sr Staff Hardware Functional Safety Engineer, who will be working closely with software, and systems engineering teams to deliver the next generation of lidar. Our ideal candidate is someone with strong knowledge of automotive functional safety (e.g ISO 26262) and who is creative and can think outside of the box to implement safety standards for our products and novel applications. This is a first set of lead hires for this function, as we look to augment this function in Luminar Technologies, Bangalore. You will be part of a high cross-functional team and responsible for rapid prototyping and product development at Luminar.
Role Responsibilities :
- Lead the development and implementation of hardware functional safety concepts and architectures for automotive hardware systems.
- Define and establish hardware safety goals, requirements, and safety mechanisms in compliance with ISO 26262 or other relevant functional safety standards.
- Work closely with HW engineering team to develop the design which fulfills Automotive Functional safety aspects
- Work closely with the HW engineering team to develop designs that fulfill Automotive Functional Safety aspects, specifically focusing on ISO 26262 Part 5 and Part 8 deliverables.
- Develop detailed hardware safety requirements specifications, including test and evaluation criteria.
- Create a refined hardware-software interface (HSI) specification.
- Compile hardware safety requirements verification reports.
- Develop hardware design specifications and hardware safety analysis reports.
- Conduct hardware design verification and provide reports.
- Analyze the effectiveness of the architecture in coping with random hardware failures.
- Perform verification review reports evaluating the architecture's effectiveness in handling random hardware failures.
- Analyze safety goal violations due to random hardware failures and specify dedicated measures for hardware, including rationales regarding their effectiveness.
- Develop supplier selection reports, development interface agreements (DIA), and supplier safety plans.
- Prepare and review functional safety assessment reports, supply agreements, hardware element evaluation plans, and hardware element evaluation reports.
- Conduct safety analyses, including FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis), FMEDA (Failure Modes, Effects, and Diagnostic Analysis), and FTA (Fault Tree Analysis), to identify and mitigate potential safety risks in the hardware design.
- Perform Hardware architectural metrics (FMEDA) and PMHF Evaluation (FTA)
- Participate in internal and external Functional Safety Audits and Assessments
- Perform Verification and Confirmation Reviews for the various safety related work products as per ISO 26262
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including hardware design engineers, system engineers, and software engineers, to ensure the integration of safety requirements throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Drive safety-related design reviews and provide technical guidance to ensure compliance with functional safety standards.
- Develop and review safety-related documentation, including safety plans, safety cases, and safety analyses reports.
- Stay up-to-date with industry standards and best practices in functional safety for automotive systems and contribute to the continuous improvement of safety processes and methodologies within the organization.
Role Requirements
- Bachelors in any engineering discipline or relevant
- Atleast six years of relevant experience in Functional Safety
- Experience using Ansys Medini or APIS IQRM or similar safety analysis tools
- Well versed with safety requirement management in tools like Code Beamer, DOORS or contemporary tools
- Formulating and designing ASIL-B/C/D conforming systems
- Demonstrable working knowledge of functional safety development processes needed to meet the requirements of the ISO 26262 standard or adjacent market standards such as IEC 61508.
- Knowledge of the failure standards such as IEC TR 62380, SN29500 and Birolini Norms
- Familiarity with automotive, mechanical, optical and electrical system architectures
- Significant knowledge of systems engineering process, hardware, and software design process
- Proven track record of translating and interpreting requirements from concept stage to design and production
- Experience on both inductive and deductive safety analysis.
- Familiarity with common analysis techniques such as Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA) at different phases of product development such as CFMEA, PFMEA, DFMEA.
- Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
Preferred Qualification and Experience
- MTech in an engineering discipline or relevant experience
- Functional Safety Professional certification or similar
- Experience in System Safety or Software Safety
- Experience in Lidar, Radar or Camera
- FPGA based development experience is an added advantage
