Job Role

This role entails working closely with the national desk and other seasoned reporters, as part of The Hindu’s Delhi bureau. You will primarily cover the Finance, Corporate Affairs and Statistics, Planning and Implementation – deliver breaking and spot news, with a digital-first approach, while parallelly working on providing perspective and topical analysis of the day’s events on a tight deadline. This role requires a deep understanding of India’s political, economic and policy landscape, with deep contacts across a range of stakeholders – from beat-related ministers, to bureaucrats, civil society and academics. You must be a natural multi-tasker, and at ease with working across platforms – audio, video print and online.


Roles and responsibilities


Reporting

Drive The Hindu’s well-regarded coverage of India’s macro-economy, economic policy, industrial production, GDP, inflation and trade numbers and forecasts.

Analysing data from these numbers, working closely with The Hindu’s data team to provide perspective and solicit expert comments.

Deliver spot/breaking news and updates for social and online; and support updating and repackaging it for print.

Report on research, think tanks and trade bodies/associations on macro-economy, fiscal, finance, trade, industry and services on forecasts and policies.

Write analysis pieces, even while ensuring beat coverage.

Covering the annual Union Budget is one of this role’s highlights, along with strategising The Hindu’s reporting on the lead-up to tabling of the document in Parliament and post-release analysis.


Beats and source building

Primarily cover the Ministers and Ministries and bureaucrats of Finance, Corporate Affairs, Commerce and Industry; and Statistics, Planning and Implementation

Have a deep network of economists, academics, bankers and bureaucrats who could provide perspectives/analysis of trends and outlook at short notice


Collaborative leadership

Work closely with other economy-related reporters and beats nationwide to deliver news and analysis; for example, stock markets, the RBI, banking and financial institutions; pharma, IT/ITeS, start-ups, agriculture, dairy and allied sectors; labour, civil aviation, railways, power, mining, telecom, automobile and automotive sectors; emerging technologies like EVs, renewable energy, AI and data centres

Collaborate with the business/deputy business editor; and the business desk to work on page layout

Work closely with editorial teams to shape the organization’s economics coverage strategy; while adhering to The Hindu’s renowned journalistic standards of independence, fact-based, and well-informed reportage.

Multimedia Reporting

Develop content across formats—print, digital, video, podcasts; and in-depth long-form stories


Desired Skills and Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in economics, business affairs, or commerce (mandatory)

Master’s degree in journalism (preferred)

More than 15 years of experience in journalism, with a proven track record in covering economic and policy beats

Expertise in covering ministries, including the Ministry of Finance, Corporate Affairs, Commerce and MoSPI

SkillsStrong storytelling abilities across formats: print, digital, video, and audio

Deep understanding of Indian economy, governance, and public policy

Excellent communication, networking, and time management skills

Proficient in writing in English, copy-editing, headline writing, while adhering to The Hindu’s style-guide on language, spelling and grammar

Languages Fluent in English, spoken, reading and writing – mandatory

Other preferred languages – Hindi, and one more regional language
