The Karmann initiative emerged as an idea to create an alternate & sustainable livelihood path for the differently abled, empowering them with mastery over the crafts of appliqué, patchwork, embroidery, and quilting. Karmann artisans create beautiful, personalized products of high quality, that are designed in-house and handmade using sustainable practices where feasible.

Karmann’s collection includes home décor & lifestyle products. Our product items cover Living, Bedding, Kitchen & Dining, Pet, Nursery, Utility & Travel and other categories. Our product items are designed & curated for corporates, individuals & families.

Function Overview

For those with significant disabilities hindering mainstream employment, we offer training in areas like art & craft, tailoring, embroidery, applique, and patchwork. To support this initiative, we’ve launched Karmann, a home and lifestyle brand exclusively staffed by trained artisans with disabilities. Karmann serves as a proof of concept for creating a profitable business leveraging the talents of PWDs.

This role reports into the Production Manager. The Designer play a key role in curating a range of products that align with our brand vision and market demands. The Designer will collaborate closely with our team of artisans with disabilities to develop unique and functional products that showcase their skillset and craftsmanship.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Product Design:
  • Conceptualize and suggest new products based on business plans for both B2B and D2C/B2C sales
  • Plan collections for the year in collaboration with the Production Manager and Marketing Manger
  • Propose value-adding techniques to enhance the quality and functionality of our products
  • Material Selection and Cataloguing:
  • Assign fabrics and raw materials for each specific product type, considering factors such as printing technique, color bleeding, texture, and functionality
  • Catalogue each raw material item/fabric to be used in the design of final products
  • Sample Preparation and Validation:
  • Prepare samples for all designs suggested and validate the products to ensure quality and functionality
  • Production Planning:
  • Prepare a final list of composite items required for manufacturing each unit product, along with quantity estimations and manufacturing time for each stage
  • Break down the production process for each product type and assign steps to artisans and tailors
  • Define intermediary processes/steps for inventory manufacturing and final product assembly



  • Training and Quality Standards:
  • Develop training modules for techniques relevant to artisans and tailors
  • Provide training and guidance on various designing and stitching techniques
  • Define quality standards for each product item, raw material, techniques, and intermediary steps
  • Market Analysis and Product Mix:
  • Stay updated on consumer trends, competitors, and pricing to inform product design and development
  • Provide inputs on product mix based on sales data, manufacturing efficiency, demand, and trends
  • Raw Material Planning:
  • Plan and estimate the quantity of raw material and fabric required based on sales projections and qualitative factors

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design, Textile Design, or related field.
  • Proven experience in product design and development, preferably in the handicraft or textile industry.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of fabric properties, printing techniques, and product manufacturing processes
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams
  • Passion for design and a commitment to inclusivity and empowerment of individuals with disabilities
  • Proficiency in market analysis and trend forecasting
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience in training and mentoring artisans or tailors is preferred but not required

Location and Travel:

This is a full-time role based in Mumbai.

Compensation and Benefits:

On par with industry standards, and commensurate with the role.
