JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT: The Data Engineer is responsible for developing, testing, and maintaining data pipelines and data warehouse environments. The important work done by Data Engineers is instrumental to everything our company does to serve clients – from data science to campaign execution and reporting. To succeed in this position, you should have strong analytical skills and the ability to combine data from different sources. You should also have deep expertise in SQL and programmatic scripting.

 

The Data Engineer owns the planning, development, management, and ongoing support of data pipelines and customer data warehouses. All data pipelines begin by extracting unstructured data from data lakes, transforming that data according to detailed specifications, and loading the data into data warehouses used to drive the marketing operations for our customers.

 

The Data Engineer works both independently and collaboratively depending on business needs but always within a structured engineering process. All work done by the data engineer begins with collaborative analysis and development of written requirements and proceeds through a process defined by peer review and user acceptance testing. The Data Engineer must be detail oriented, must document their work, and must communicate technical details clearly with peers and stakeholders.

 

 

A detailed explanation of each responsibility is as follows:

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·      Develop data pipelines using extensive SQL and Knime

·      Write data transformations in a scripting language such as Python or PHP

·      Peer review the SQL and scripting work of other engineers

·      Implement robust error monitoring and reporting features within new and existing data pipelines

·      Troubleshoot data pipelines, data accuracy, and performance issues when they arise

·      Support other Data Engineers through peer review, knowledge sharing, and pair engineering

·      Implement automated data accuracy testing and reporting capabilities throughout customer data warehouses

·      Identify opportunities to improve and make more efficient all aspects of the company’s data engineer practices

·      Review data governance documentation and ensure data pipelines and customer data warehouses comply with business rules

·      Properly estimate the complexity of highly technical work and required engineering duration

 

EDUCATION, SKILLS QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

 

·      5+ years of experience managing enterprise databases or data warehouses preferred

·      5+ years of deep experience in SQL preferred

·      Excellent written and oral communication skills

·      Excellent technical writing skills

·      Bachelor of science degree in computer science, computer engineering, or information management preferred; qualified experience may substitute

·      Experience working with marketing data is preferred

·      Experience mentoring and/or teaching other engineers is preferred
