The Role

The Battery Electrical Systems Engineer is the detailed design owner of our company’s traction

battery pack electrical and electro-chemical hardware at component and vehicle levels. You will serve as the expert interface between powertrain requirements, engineering design houses, contract manufacturers, joint development partners, and testing partners. You will report to the VP of Engineering in the organization.


What You’ll Do

• Perform powertrain battery sizing exercises using methods like analytical, simulation/modeling, industry survey, and competitor vehicle benchmarking using data acquisition equipment.

• Translate sizing requirements into pack and cell level technical requirements. Masterfully perform trade-offs that allow powertrains to delight customers while managing part and running costs.

• Own the battery cell activities including identifying capacity, chemistry, form factor, BMS specification and configuration (including communication signals), battery test specifications, mechanical packaging, thermal performance, electrical isolation, industry standards, and vertification processes. Be our technical point of contact for these topics with contract manufacturing partners.

• Work efficiently with our supply chain leaders to identify and globally source all battery related components including cells, connectors, analog sensing ICs, IoT modules that deliver a great customer experience.

• Work hands on with our engineers to test samples or prototypes of cells, battery packs using bench level static loads, dynamometer level and vehicle riding level.

• Work closely with leads to integrate the battery pack into the vehicle – this includes electrical integration as well as thermal management.


What You Bring

• Multi-disciplinary problem solver and low ego collaborator.

• 7+ years of experience developing EV powertrain battery technologies and bringing high volumes to market – startup experience highly desirable.

• Experience developing models or simulations using Matlab/Python/Excel.

• Experience using electrical CAD and mechanical 2D/3D CAD design tools to design/ inspect PCBs, mechanical fixtures, battery enclosures.

• Applied knowledge in tolerance stack analysis and GD&T.

• Experience in IC selection, device selection, BOM generation, PCB testing and debugging using lab tools such as oscilloscopes, power supplies and probes.

• Experience in battery cell selection for passenger EVs, with ability to trade-off between performance, mass, cost, longevity, and supplier risk.

• Experience developing BMS system architecture including analog sampling and conditioning, state machine algorithms, security mechanisms between pack and vehicle, contactor/relay control timing and safety/fault tolerant operation.

• Understanding of comms interfaces such CAN, ethernet, SPI, UART, and RS-485.

• Understand analog, digital, and mixed signal domain topics including EMI/EMC/Immunity and cross talk effects typical to electric powertrains.

• Experience working with contract manufacturers, joint development partners through DFM, DFA to ensure the powertrain and vehicle is scalable to high volumes.
