Job Summary:


Lycoming Engines is seeking a self-motivated aviation safety professional to lead the establishment, continued development, improvement, and execution of our Safety Management System (SMS).

This position is the company focal point for the management of the SMS to include tools and oversight and has direct interaction with all facets of the business from supplier to fielded fleet issues and everything in between.


This position is directly involved with worldwide regulators and other aviation industry companies and working groups in the development of aerospace SMS standards and potential rule making activity.

The ideal candidate will be able to step into a leadership role within the industry.


The SMS manager will develop Lycoming Engines SMS policies and procedures, incorporate existing tools into the Lycoming architecture, training Lycoming employees on SMS, and act as a leader to incorporate the Just Culture with the support of Lycoming Leadership.


Responsibilities:


Interact with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), TCCA (Transport Canada Civil Aviation), EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) and other government entities to ensure the continued regulatory acceptance of the enterprise Corporate/Design & Manufacturing (D&M) SMS.

Interact with other Textron Business Units SMS leaders as appropriate.
Maintain monthly SMS metrics of key indicators of SMS health.
Present SMS metrics and updates periodically to Lycoming Leadership.
Conduct internal SMS audits of Lycomings facilities.
Administrative oversight of the following software systems: Premier (Safety Risk Management)
PRISM (Hazard Reporting)
Qualtrics (Surveys)
Bow-Tie Pro (Hazard Analysis)

Ownership of SMS Policies, Procedures and Processes; maintain, update, and create required SMS documentation.

Maintain, record, and provide effective training to the workforce on SMS and the appropriate tools for reporting, evaluating, mitigating, and eliminating risk.

Monitor the SRM database in Premier for the effective reporting, management, and resolution of identified risk.
Attend Product Safety Board meetings.
Actively track SMS items in the SRM tool and shepherd them to completion.
Lead, monitor and participate in Just Culture reviews concerning product safety events. Participate in other Just Culture reviews as required.

Monitor the PRISM Aircraft Hazard Reporting Tool, identify, and take ownership of SMS issues, assign risk exposure levels when required and input risk items into the SRM tool.

Create and maintain report templates in PRISM.
Conduct annual safety culture surveys as required.
Provide mentorship to company leadership on SMS tenants and maintaining a Just Culture.
Provide leadership to a cross-functional team that can include representatives from Procurement, Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, Sales, Finance and Marketing.
Utilize Six Sigma principles and resources where appropriate.
Provide Lycoming Management with program status updates.
Attend SAE or other industry conferences, as appropriate.

Bachelor's Degree in a Technical (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Computer Engineering) discipline preferred.
3 years experience in a managerial role.
5 years experience in an engineering or operations role.
Six Sigma Black Belt preferred, Six Sigma Green Belt required or demonstrated Experience in Root Cause, Corrective Action processes.
Demonstrated Risk and Data Analysis experience preferred.
MS Office Suite experience (PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Project, Word)
Excellent Presentation Skills.
Ability to influence others.
Demonstrated Communication Skills needed to brief top-level management, customers and/or large groups on an occasional-to-frequent basis.

Experience with FAA regulations per Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 33 a plus.
