Head of Music

OVERVIEW

The Head of School appoints the Head of Music with input from the Governing Board.

The Head of Music is responsible for leading the school’s music program and promoting a culture of creativity, performance, and artistic excellence across all grade levels. In addition to managing and developing the school’s music curriculum and resources, the Head of Music supports students and teachers in integrating music effectively within the IB framework.

All teachers employed by the school have professional responsibilities to their students, to themselves, to the institution, to their colleagues, and to the wider school community. Each teacher must ensure that all students are safe, secure, and properly supervised at all times.

EXPECTATIONS

As an educational professional working in a K–12 international school, it is expected that a teacher will:

● demonstrate an explicit commitment to the philosophy, mission, vision, and values of the school as determined by the Governing Board;

● establish and maintain an appropriate social, emotional, physical, and intellectual learning environment in which all students may succeed;

● have a thorough and age-appropriate knowledge and understanding of music skills, concepts, and pedagogy;

● use a variety of appropriate instructional and assessment practices and techniques;

● work collaboratively and constructively with colleagues across grade levels and subject areas;

● respect and treat all community members equitably and model respect for the culture, languages, beliefs, and people of the school’s host country, India;

● contribute actively to school life beyond classroom and music-related teaching;

● communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues while maintaining confidentiality;

● take full advantage of professional development opportunities related to IB education, music, and performing arts;

● be familiar with the operational practices, curriculum framework, and expectations of the school;

● keep abreast of relevant educational developments, research, and music teaching practices;

● adhere to school policies and guidelines published in the Faculty Handbook, contract, and other official documents.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities of the Head of Music include:

● promoting a love of music, creativity, and artistic expression among students and staff;

● developing students’ musical, performance, and collaborative skills aligned with IB Approaches to Learning (ATL);

● collaborating with teachers to integrate music into transdisciplinary Units of Inquiry (UOIs) and school events;

● developing the content of lessons and music programs in relation to the school’s philosophy, objectives, and IB-recognized curriculum framework;

● curating, organizing, and maintaining a diverse collection of musical instruments, scores, and digital resources to support teaching and learning;

● ensuring that music spaces are safe, inclusive, and conducive to creativity, performance, and collaboration;

● supporting school culture through concerts, assemblies, performances, and interdisciplinary projects;

● guiding students in ethical performance practices, teamwork, and appreciation of diverse musical traditions;

● integrating technology and digital tools into teaching and learning practices;

● ensuring the safety and well-being of all students within the music classrooms and during rehearsals or performances;

● actively contributing to the creation, development, and revision of the school’s written, taught, and assessed music curriculum;

● attending school as required by contract and being punctual to classes, meetings, and duties;

● meeting internal and external deadlines promptly and maintaining professional standards at all times.
