Role Description
As Mechanical Design Engineer, you will own the industrial and enclosure design of our biometric scanner. You'll translate system requirements into manufacturable CAD models, prototype fittings, and work closely with electronics, firmware, and industrial partners to ensure a robust, user-friendly device.
Qualifications
- Expertise in Hardware Development and Hardware Engineering
- Proficiency in Circuit Design and Electronics Hardware Design
- Strong understanding of Computer Hardware
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with remote teams
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- Experience in the technology or electronics industry is a plus
Key Responsibilities
- Enclosure & Structural DesignDevelop CAD models for the one‑way mirror housing, camera mounts, matrix display enclosure, and base assembly.
- Balance aesthetics, ergonomics, and manufacturability (DFM/DFX) for small‑batch production.
- Thermal & Material EngineeringAnalyze thermal loads from the compute module; design heat‑sinks, vents, or passive cooling features.
- Select materials (plastics, metals, composites) that meet strength, weight, and finish requirements.
- Prototyping & ValidationRapidly iterate prototypes using 3D printing, CNC machining, and hand‑assembled mockups.
- Conduct fit‑and‑function tests; refine tolerances, snap‑fits, and assembly methods.
- DFM/DFA & Supplier LiaisonPrepare drawings and BOMs for injection molding, sheet‑metal, or small‑batch machining.
- Coordinate with contract manufacturers and sheet‑metal shops to validate tooling and production runs.
- Cross‑Functional CollaborationWork with Electronics Engineers to define mounting points, connector cutouts, and cable routing.
- Partner with Firmware & CV teams to ensure unobstructed sensor fields of view and service access.
- Documentation & ComplianceProduce detailed CAD drawings, exploded‑view assemblies, and assembly guides.
- Support regulatory testing (safety, drop‑test) by providing mechanical test plans and design inputs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or equivalent.
- 3+ years of experience in consumer‑grade hardware or medical‑device enclosure design.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks, Fusion360, or equivalent CAD software.
- Strong understanding of DFM/DFA principles for plastics and metals.
- Hands‑on prototyping skills (3D printing, CNC, sheet‑metal).
- Excellent 2D drawing skills and GD&T knowledge.
Preferred Skills
- Experience designing one‑way‑mirror or back‑lit display enclosures.
- Familiarity with thermal simulation tools (CFD) or hand‑calculated thermal analysis.
- Background in ergonomic design and human‑factors engineering.
- Exposure to small‑batch manufacturing processes and vendor management.
- Knowledge of EMC/EMI enclosure best practices.
