Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, propose and conduct experiments to develop cathode materials for lithium-ion battery applications.
  • Generate new materials via novel scalable pathways, including high temperature cathode material synthesis.
  • Characterize the composition, crystal structure and microstructure of cathode materials.
  • Design and conduct electrical/electrochemical performance measurements at both component and cell level.
  • Plan and execute statistical designs of experiment (DoE's) to identify relevant factors and optimize performance.
  • Lead and Mentor junior team members, technicians, and interns, provide technical consultation to cross-functional partners.
  • Collaborate with other team members to product development as per cell deliverables
  • Collaborate with global and local material (Cathode, Binder, conductive additive, Foils and others) vendors to screen the materials and bench mark the cathode electrodes as per deliverables of cells
  • Work with process team to make SOP of slurry preparation in prototype labs for cells
  • Creating the IP in terms of process, materials and technology
  • Characterise the cell tear down parts of cathode section such as cathode material, binder, aluminium foil, conductive carbons materials and analyse the results.

Desired Competencies:

  • Strong organizational and project management skills. Able to prioritize and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Deep understanding of lithium-ion batteries and cathode chemistry, especially Lithium iron phosphate olive phase materials, High nickel content NMC, and NMCA including composition-process-performance relationships
  • Hands-on wet chemistry and synthesis, characterization and testing of commercial lithium-ion battery materials.
  • Hands on experience in materials characterization (XRD, PSA, FTIR, ICP-OES, BET, SEM, XPS, TGA/DSC) and cell testing methodologies with their data analysis and interpretation.
  • High attention to detail, accuracy and precision in experimental design and analysis of results
  • Strong communication skills and ability to simplify complexity for non-technical partners
  • Physical demand:
  • Must be able to work in a laboratory and dry room environment, requiring standing for 25% or more of the time.
  • Must have dexterity to handle delicate battery components and laboratory equipment.
  • Must be able to physically operate scientific equipment and instruments

Qualifications:

  • PhD in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related scientific discipline with a minimum of 3 to 5 years of post-graduate experience in lithium-ion batteries.
  • Strong technical knowledge and experience in battery materials for lithium-ion batteries, and a track record of delivery results.
  • Deep knowledge and strong hands-on experience in inorganic powder material synthesis, from wet chemistry to gas-solid/solid-solid high-temperature process
