What the role is all about:

We’re looking for a Lead Engineer (5-8 years’ experience) who thrives on solving complex problems and leading projects that deliver real value to customers. You’ll work with the Engineering Manager, Product, and Design to shape and deliver features across our microservice ecosystem, leading delivery across a Java backend and React frontend.

In the Rental Applications team, we empower agencies by digitising their day-to-day activities so they can focus on what matters most. Our solutions help agencies find the best tenants faster and more efficiently, all through a compliant, user-friendly experience.

While no two days are likely to be the same, your typical responsibilities will include:

• Deliver technical solutions, contributing code and supporting delivery of features across Java, Node.js backend and React frontend
• Collaborate with Engineering Manager, Product, and Design to align technical direction with business goals
• Mentor and support other engineers, sharing your expertise to help them grow
• Solve technical challenges in ways that enable the team to learn and extend solutions
• Participate in planning, code reviews, testing and documentation
• Adhere to REA Group’s engineering practices (CI/CD, testing, observability, distributed systems)
• Communicate and collaborate effectively with stakeholders

Who we’re looking for:

• Strong experience developing backend services with Java and Spring Boot (Node.js is a plus)
• Solid frontend skills in React
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures and microservices ecosystems
• Experience with AWS cloud services and infrastructure automation
• Proficiency in developing and optimizing relational databases, especially Postgres
• Skilled in building API-driven products
• Understanding of CI/CD, TDD, modern software delivery and observability
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with business stakeholders, Product, and Design
• Experience mentoring other engineers and contributing to a positive team culture

Bonus points for:

• Experience with search technologies such as Elasticsearch
• Proficiency with data analytics tools and platforms, including SQL and Google BigQuery
