FinOps Cloud Optimization Engineer

Role Overview:

As a Cloud Optimization Engineer, you will be at the center of technical cost efficiency efforts across our multi-cloud environment (AWS, Azure, GCP). Your mission is to reduce waste, improve cloud utilization, and embed automation into the cloud lifecycle. You'll collaborate with Business IT teams and central infrastructure teams to steer and implement recommendations and continuously improve our cloud efficiency posture.

This is a high-impact technical role in a complex environment, where cost optimization needs to be pragmatic, stakeholder-aligned, and automation-driven.

Key Responsibilities:

Cloud Cost Optimization & Governance:

• Act as technical counterpart for cloud stakeholders in business IT.

Reporting & Accountability:

• Track the financial impact of optimization initiatives (quantified € savings).
• Support FinOps reporting with technical root cause analysis for cost anomalies.
• Provide input to forecast accuracy and budget alignment through technical insights.
• Analyze cost and usage data across platforms across IaaS, PaaS and SaaS using Cloudability, AWS Trusted Advisor, Azure Advisor, and GCP Recommender.
• Identify and drive execution of optimization actions such as:
• Rightsizing compute and storage resources
• Instance scheduling and shutdown policies
• Tiered storage strategies
• Commitment usage (e.g., Savings Plans)

Automation and Tooling

Develop or integrate automation scripts and pipelines for:

• Anomaly detection alerting
• Scheduled resource optimization (e.g., Lambda for auto-stop/start)
• Cost reporting and budget guardrails
• Implement automation for anomaly detection and policy enforcement
• Contribute to PoC and rollout of tools like Turbonomic or other optimization platforms.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and automation of cloud cost processes.

Collaboration with Technical Teams:

• Review their cloud setup and usage
• Co-design sustainable and cost-aware architecture choices
• Support tagging standardization and enforcement, enabling better cost attribution and insights.

Key Qualifications & Experience:

• 3–5 years in Cloud Engineering, FinOps - DevOps roles.
• Strong practical knowledge of AWS, Azure, and/or GCP services.

Hands-on experience with:

• Cloud-native optimization tools (Trusted Advisor, Azure Advisor, Turbonomic etc.)
• Automation scripting (Python, Bash, PowerShell)
• Solid understanding of cloud billing models and pricing mechanics.
• Experience with Cloudability (Apptio) or equivalent cost management tools.
• Comfortable engaging in technical conversations with architects, but also in reporting savings impact to non-technical stakeholders.
• FinOps Foundation Certification (Practitioner or Advanced) a nice to have
• Knowledge of security & compliance constraints around cloud optimization in regulated industries (e.g., financial services).
