The Cigna International Health unit uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) services and custom, proprietary solutions implemented in AWS, to pre-process paper health care claims from around the world. The volume is expected to reach significantly higher per day, as expansion of the initiative is one of the top priorities for International Health.

To do so, the engineering lead is expected to build and support solutions that pre-process the paper image claims to extract data, build pipelines using serverless solutions and invoke AI/ML processes to populate claim data from the submitted claims. The engineering lead will also be accountable and responsible for the health of the solution building metrics, monitoring and operational dashboards. Foster engineering and innovation by leading the team of engineers as an example.

Required Skills:

  • Hands-on experience with Python, Boto3, and test-driven development techniques such as unit testing and gameday testing.
  • Hands-on experience with common AWS Services such as Lambdas, Step Functions, Glue jobs, SQS queues, DynamoDB, S3, RDS, and CloudWatch.
  • Hands-on experience with Machine Learning services such as Sagemaker Studio, Sagemaker Inference endpoints, XGBoost and scikit-learn containers, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform IaC and ability to deploy applications to production
  • Experience in deploying applications using CI/CD pipelines such as Jenkins, experience with building python applications as WHLs
  • Ability to understand the cost of running infrastructure and come up optimization approaches.
  • Understanding of scaling and performance of cloud infrastructure undertake necessary measures to improve stability and throughput of the platform services.
  • Enters an existing team and learns rapidly about the overall goals of the solution. Leads and collaborates with the rest of the team to explore paths towards the overall goals, listening, digesting, and then sharing recommendations proactively to inform prioritization.

  • Proficient with best practices on controls and platform health under a high-sensitivity and high-throughput operational process (claim operations), while achieving cost minimization.

  • Performs work according to Cloud COE best practices, other internal controls, other external best practices (e.g. code maintenance), and conducts peer review. Builds in extensible frameworks, using repeatable patterns, so that new steps added to the solution can be incorporated when introduced, without requiring specialized knowledge. Leverages test driven development, and ensures testing coverage. Adept at debugging techniques, and sets up systems that can be debugged with ease.

  • Executes, understands that work is not complete until it is implemented. When analysis is complete and decisions have been made, the work has only just begun. Embraces an agile mindset to adjust to best achieve the overall goals; is not locked into initial decisions. At the same time, develops plans in advance to find a healthy balance of preparedness and flexibility, as appropriate for each situationâs needs.

  • Collaborates with upstream and downstream teams to insure full and effective implementation, in spirit of the overall goals. Communicates with all affected parties about changes in advance, especially if there is some probability a prior estimate may not be achievable.

  • Humble, rapidly raises up defects, and reflects on where prior judgment was incorrect in the spirit of growth. Good news travels fast, bad news faster. Addresses the mistakes of others in the spirit of learning and growth. Models these behaviors in the team retrospective.

  • Watches emerging technologies and balances the use of those technologies with the use of known technologies, depending on the incremental contribution to value. I.E. going to Mars requires a leading-edge space-ship, but delivering a package does not. What task are we solving for?

  • Supports the development of staff by sharing feedback in real time, reviewing development plans, and discussing past contributions and future growth during check-ins; Practices sustainable management by driving documentation of context and knowledge across the team.
