Description

The DevOps Engineer (DE) role is a key function in the DevOps organization. An employee holding this position is most likely to be an engineer with some professional experience in DevOps. The DE will be implementing and enhancing our deployment and operational management tooling, executing it in all environments, including Production and taking feedback from that process and folding it back into the improvements backlog. The DE is not expected to know all parts of the DevOps lifecycle from software delivery pipeline, supporting software engineering through to delivery to Production. However, the DE will be expected to learn and handle tasks in areas that they do not have experience in over time. The DevOps team is aggressively adopting new technologies and architectural principles, as well as approaches to delivery, deployment, scalability and monitoring. Having a mix of software engineering and technical operations backgrounds is ideal but not mandatory.

Reporting Lines:

Reports to: Lead DevOps Engineer

Note: Our office works in a hybrid model. As per policy this role is required to work from office 2 mandatory days in a week.

Will be called on during “out of office” hours to support production issue resolution as well as provide on call rota support.

Roles and responsibilities

Work as part of the DevOps function within the wider Engineering organization.  Focused primarily on delivering technical solutions for improving the overall quality of product build, deployments, automation, monitoring and alerting, with emphasis on NFRs (resilience, stability, scalability, security etc.) Consistently delivers high quality work within agreed timelines and as per defined standards. Help ensure that our environments are stable at all times. Help implement & maintain CI/CD strategy. Create accurate documentation for use by all stakeholders like Development, QA, Technical Operations, Product, Support, etc. Work on assigned R&D effort as required enhance DevOps capabilities. Participate in defining and prioritizing a backlog of work for the team. Participate in an “out of hours” support rota. Provide timely updates to supervisor. Proactively seeks out ways of sharing information with peers. Liaises with internal stakeholders and other departments in relation to their current work. Continuous learning especially in areas where the DE has very little to no experience. Pick up new skills that will help contribute in areas of DevOps where the DE has little to no experience. This will also help in the technical and personal career growth of the DE.

Knowledge & Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in CS or equivalent required Around 3 years of hands-on DevOps experience is preferable. Else a software engineer who has knowledge of DevOps and wishes to help build DevOps tooling and pipelines. Software development experience is a huge plus. Experience in delivering DevOps components (pipeline, VI, automation etc.) of major commercial IT projects and ongoing BAU tasks. Works independently on bugs/defects and features/tasks of moderate complexity Ability to work as part of a small team in collaboration with other engineers. Decent communication and collaboration skills. Comfortable in a rapidly changing environment. Some knowledge/experience in Agile methodologies is a plus. Attitude, willingness and flexibility to learn and handle given problems/tasks in areas/technologies you may not have had prior experience in.

Technical skills

Essential

Hands-on experience in DevOps with particular focus on Linux and open source technologies. Good knowledge & some experience of cloud-based systems (AWS preferably). Knowledge of both relational databases and various NoSQL based data storage solutions. Understanding of opensource solutions that enable the implementation of highly distributed, scalable, durable, and performant platforms such as Kafka. Demonstrable experience with agile methodologies and tools for development and operations is preferred. Experience with CI/CD solutions, such as Git, Maven, Gradle, Jenkins, Sonar and Ansible. Experienced with open source solutions for configuration management, elastic scaling, service discovery, and cloud management. Knowledge of Docker & Kubernetes. Practical experience is a plus. Knowledge of terraform (ideally on AWS or VMware). Practical experience is a plus. Good communication & collaboration skills.

Domain knowledge is not required, but having worked on a Sportsbook, Casino or e-Commerce projects would be preferable.
