Requirements

We are looking for an experienced PostgreSQL Subject Matter Expert (SME) to join our team. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in PostgreSQL, a proven track record in building, managing, and scaling PostgreSQL databases in high-demand production environments, and strong problem-solving skills in resolving complex incidents. As the PostgreSQL SME, you will lead and guide the team, working hands-on with infrastructure automation tools like Terraform, Helm, and optionally Ansible, to ensure the highest levels of database reliability, performance, and scalability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • PostgreSQL Management:

    • Design, implement, and manage PostgreSQL databases for high-volume, 24x7, customer-facing production environments.
    • Ensure database performance, availability, scalability, and security by performing routine upgrades, patches, and fine-tuning configurations.
    • Monitor and optimize PostgreSQL database performance, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing performance-tuning measures.

  • Incident Resolution:

    • Lead efforts in resolving complex production and non-production incidents involving PostgreSQL databases, ensuring minimal downtime and quick turnaround times.
    • Troubleshoot database performance issues, application-related issues, and resolve data corruption or data loss scenarios.
    • Conduct root cause analysis on recurring database issues and propose long-term solutions to prevent reoccurrence.

  • Leadership & Mentoring:

    • Provide technical leadership to a team of engineers, mentoring them on best practices and efficient use of PostgreSQL.
    • Collaborate with development, DevOps, and operations teams to ensure seamless integration of PostgreSQL into various applications and environments.
    • Lead the database management lifecycle, including architecture, deployment, scaling, and optimization.

  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC):

    • Utilize Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, Helm, and optionally Ansible, to automate PostgreSQL infrastructure provisioning, scaling, and configuration management.
    • Maintain PostgreSQL clusters through automated processes, ensuring efficiency and scalability across different environments (development, staging, production).

  • Operational Excellence:

    • Establish and maintain best practices for PostgreSQL database administration, including backup and recovery procedures, disaster recovery planning, and security configurations.
    • Implement monitoring, alerting, and logging solutions to ensure comprehensive visibility into database health and performance.
    • Collaborate with other teams to integrate PostgreSQL databases with CI/CD pipelines and automate database operations.

  • Documentation & Continuous Improvement:

    • Create and maintain detailed documentation for PostgreSQL processes, including architecture diagrams, operational guidelines, troubleshooting documentation, and incident reports.
    • Continuously seek ways to improve PostgreSQL database operations, adopting new tools and technologies to enhance performance and reduce operational costs.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • PostgreSQL Expertise: Extensive hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, including architecture, configuration, performance tuning, backup/recovery, and replication.
  • Production Environment Experience: Proven experience managing PostgreSQL in 24x7, high-demand, customer-facing production environments.
  • Incident Management: Strong problem-solving skills, with experience in resolving complex production and non-production incidents, minimizing downtime.
  • Leadership Skills: Ability to lead a team of database engineers and developers, providing guidance on best practices for PostgreSQL database management.
  • IaC Expertise: Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform, Helm, and optionally Ansible to automate PostgreSQL deployments and configurations.
  • Automation & Monitoring: Experience in automating PostgreSQL operations and using monitoring tools to track database performance, availability, and health.
  • Self-Motivation: Highly organized, motivated, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced, cross-functional team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Ansible: Familiarity with Ansible for PostgreSQL automation and configuration management is a plus.
  • Cloud Platforms: Experience deploying and managing PostgreSQL in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • DevOps & CI/CD: Hands-on experience integrating PostgreSQL databases with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
  • Scripting & Automation: Proficiency in scripting languages like Python, Bash, or SQL for database-related automation tasks.
