Job Description:

The topic for investigation:

Modern turbofan engine is an elegant and relatively simple solution that enables improving thermal and propulsive efficiencies simultaneously. However, they are not fully exempted from the in-service problems, for example the well known issue of accelerated turbine material degradation in harsh environments. Further, the larger engines (with Higher BPR) limits the aircraft performance during climb phase following significant loss of thrust at higher Mach. In other words, propulsion systems with high BPRs are not much limited by take-off performance but more by the climb performance. On the same page of high speed performance, engines with high BPRs have been also known for not allowing to carry a step cruise profile at very high altitudes as arising from limited excess thrust. 

Other factors that might affect choosing the Turbofan engine as a power plant or limit from attaining very high BPRs are its weight and ground handling problems owing to its huge diameter.

The proposed study aims to evaluate an engine concept that deems potential to answer some of the top airlines concerns as listed below along with the envisioned means:

1.0 Poor engine on wing life

Increase the engine on wing time by lowering the engine take-off temperatures. A distinct method of thrust boosting has been realized to achieve this objective.

2.0 Need to rise the operational flexibility and efficiency

High ICAC & superior climb times anticipated by the approach of raising the engine overall flow along with the rise in the core mass flow at slightly reduced BPR.

(*Initial Cruise Altitude Capability)

3.0 Larger engine size 

Employing a technology that is currently being researched within the aerospace industry for engine diameter reduction yet maintaining high BPR.



 

Scope of the study:

The proposed study aims at the following elements to be assessed:

Engine cycle design and optimisation.

Evaluation of engine off-design performance. This may be simplified by applying factors to the design point performance.

Estimating the propulsion system & airframe weights (based on the information available in the research domain.)

Down Selecting the optimum cycles with their aimed trade-offs which will provide best figures for mission fuel burn and several other parameters. This phase includes overall aircraft performance analysis.


 

Expected outcomes:

Determine viability of the proposed engine concept: Performance benefits vs the engine complexity. 

Compare the mission fuel burn metrics with existing and the upcoming next-generation power plants. (Those available in open research domain)

Derivation of other metrics such as Co2/Nox emissions, Noise emissions, flight times saved, and Improvement in engine on wing time. 


 

Duration and skills sought:

The internship is expected to run for 6 months with 2 candidates working in synergy.

Student 1: Strong Propulsion background

  • Responsible for carrying out cycle design and optimisation.

  • Engine off-design performance evaluation.

  • Partial contribution to weight estimation of the sought engine components.

  • Partial contribution to the assessment of various engine Emissions at take-off and during climb/cruise .

  • Calculations of improvement in engine on wing life.

  • Good knowledge of Python or Matlab or C++

Student 2: Basics of  Propulsion + Strong Aircraft performance understanding

  • Responsible for carrying out airframe weight estimation to be used in airframe and engine sizing activity.

  • Partial contribution to weight estimation of the sought engine components.

  • Partially or fully responsible for the assessment of various engine Emissions at take-off and during climb/cruise .

  • Carry out the Aircraft mission analysis to derive the fuel burn figures.

  • Calculation of block and trip times.

  • Good knowledge of Python or Matlab or C++
